Southern Beaufort Sea: The Lives Of Polar Bears:

Southern Beaufort Sea: The Lives Of Polar Bears By Alejandra Bermudez

Polar bears:

Polar bears Polar bears are dependent on sea-ice for foraging, resting, and reproduction.

Polar bear threats:

Polar bear threats Today, polar bear populations are facing threats previously unprecedented during recorded history in the Arctic. Recent climate change scenarios based upon modeling of climate trend data predict that the Arctic region will experience major changes in the upcoming decades.

Slide 5:

On the most drastic models predicts that the Arctic basin may be void of ice within 50 years. Other models have shown that ice thickness has decreased by 40% during the past 30 years and the average annual extent of ice coverage in the polar region has diminished substantially, with an average annual reduction of over 1 million square kilometers.

Slide 7:

Changes that alter the period of ice coverage could affect distribution and impact polar bears bears may spend greater amounts of time on land decreased physical condition could affect production and survival

Slide 8:

Denning (shelter) could be impacted by unusual warm spells access to high quality shelter areas may be limited or restricted loss of thermal insulative properties in opened dens could affect litter survival Environmental contaminants in the form of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) pose an additional area of increased concern for polar bears

Results A recent mark-recapture population estimate of 1,526 bears and newly estimated birth and death rates suggests a decline in recent years. Sea-ice habitat has decline dramatically. The Southern Beaufort Sea is typically ice covered from October to June and partially or completely ice free from July to September. In recent years, the distance of sea ice retreat from the coast in summer has increased

Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags :

Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags

Slide 12:

Although this innovating new producer in recording data on polar bears is not a risk factor, it is quite interesting in how technology has evolved to track specific data of polar bears in exact regions, which is much safer than shooting a tranquilizer. Application of existing and emerging Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, currently used for military and commerce, has the potential to significantly increase the sample size of marked bears by decreasing the cost of recapturing bears.

Slide 13:

An RFID system contains two major components: tags and a reader. The goal is to adapt the RFID system and test its feasibility for wildlife research and management by modifying the tags so they can be attached to bear ears and by modifying the reader for use in aircraft and land vehicles.
