earthquake An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves . The seismicity or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.

A Changing Earth Scientists hypothesize that North and South America must have been 6,000 miles apart 450 million years ago. Yet, 250 million years later, they lay locked together as part of Pangea , the great supercontinent. Then a great rift developed between them and today’s Atlantic Ocean began to open. [The plates don’t move very quickly. But consider this: Two inches per year - a typical speed - adds up to 30 miles in one million years. It took only 150 million years for a slight fracture in an ancient continent to turn into today’s Atlantic Ocean].

Plate Boundaries There are 3 primary types of Tectonic Plate boundaries: Divergent boundaries; Convergent boundaries; and Transform boundaries. As the giant plates move, diverging [pulling apart] or converging [coming together] along their borders, tremendous energies are unleashed resulting in tremors that transform Earth’s surface Divergent Boundaries : At divergent boundaries new crust is created as two or more plates pull away from each other. Oceans are born and grow wider where plates diverge or pull. Convergent Boundaries : Here crust is destroyed and recycled back into the interior of the Earth as one plate dives under another. These are known as Subduction Zones - mountains and volcanoes are often found where plates converge. There are 3 types of convergent boundaries: Oceanic-Continental Convergence; Oceanic-Oceanic Convergence; and Continental-Continental Convergence .

Transform-Fault Boundaries : Transform-Fault Boundaries are where two plates are sliding horizontally past one another. These are also known as transform boundaries or more commonly as faults.

Lushan Earthquake 2013 The Lushan earthquake occurred at 08:02 Beijing Time on April 20, 2013. The epicenter was located in Lushan county about 116 km from Chengdu along the Longmenshan Fault in the same province heavily impacted by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake . The magnitude of the earthquake was placed at M s 7.0 by China Earthquake Data Center .

The earthquake has resulted in 196 people dead at least 11,826 injured with more than 968 seriously injured Several townships suffered major damage and many old buildings in Lushan collapsed. The electricity service was interrupted and the electricity grids in the counties of Baoxing , Lushan , and Tianquan disintegrated. EFFECTS

RESCUE IN FULL FORCE A total of 18,000 soldiers and officers from China's military and armed police forces and members of paramilitary reserve forces have been sent to the quake affected areas, and so far 10,000 have reached areas which are seriously stricken The armed forces had dispatched 23 helicopters to carry out material transportation missions. 5,800 police staff have saved 103 people in quake hit areas . more than 2,300 firemen have been engaged in rescue work and saved 96 people. A total of 982 medical workers and 202 medical vehicles had rushed to the quake-hit areas.

B lood stock in Ya'an and Chengdu was sufficient and can fully meet needs. T en senior medical experts rushed from Beijing to Sichuan to help prevent possible epidemic outbreak, including the H7N9 avian flu . T he State General Administration of Press sent 300 battery-powered satellite receivers, 10,000 radios and a batch of mobile multi-media broadcast and TV receivers TV and radio broadcast signals have been kept alive in all regions where power supply is available . At around IRDT 15:14 pm on 16 April 2013, an Earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck a mountainous area between the cities of Saravan and Khash in Sistan and Baluchestan Province , Iran , close to the border with Pakistan , lasting about 25 seconds . The quake occurred at an intermediate depth in the Arabian plate lithosphere , near the boundary between the subducting Arabian Plate and the overriding Eurasian Plate at a depth of about 80 km 2013 Sistan and Baluchistan E arthquake

PowerPoint Presentation:

The quake reportedly occurred within the sub ducting Arabian Plate below the overriding Eurasian Plate . The Strait of Hormuz separates two forms of plate collision. To the northwest, continental crust portions of the Arabian and Eurasian Plates are colliding, resulting in compressive faulting . To the southeast, dense oceanic crust of the Arabian Plate is subducting underneath the Eurasian Plate at the Makran Trench . Tectonics

PowerPoint Presentation:

EFFECTS The earthquake struck 83 kilometres (52 mi) east of the city of Khash , and was felt throughout much of eastern Iran and southern Pakistan, and as far away as Riyadh , Manama , Doha , Abu Dhabi , Muscat , and Delhi . Initial sources cited that close to 100 people lost their lives in Iran and that Iran had confirmed the deaths of 40 , but these sources have been disputed; Iran has since officially denied death counts, only reporting injuries more than 950 . T he small town of Hiduj , which had a population of around 1,000 according to a 2006 census, had been badly damaged . The number of casualties was higher in the neighbouring state of Pakistan , with at least 34 reported deaths another 105 injured

An official from Iran's Red Crescent Society told Isna that 22 search and rescue teams, including 17 rescue dogs, had been dispatched to the region Hundreds of people are being assisted by relief and rescue teams from Pakistan and Iranian Red Crescent. Camps have been set up in Iran with more than 400 tents to shelter close to 1700 people Disaster relief, such as food, water and other essential items are being provided by Red Crescent to people in the affected areas Red Crescent has also been assisting with air search and rescue in two helicopters, looking for survivors. Six teams, with sniffer dogs, have also been assisting to search for survivors amid the debris . 2,000 tents, 5,000 blankets and 500 food packages are part of the expedition sent by the Red Crescent in South Khorasan province Rescue Efforts
