PowerPoint Presentation:

Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. Volunteer-delivered Kindergarten-12 th grade 202,000 volunteers Work readiness Entrepreneurship Financial literacy skills

Engagement Activities:

Engagement Activities The community need that I addressed was more towards teaching elementary students and supplementing the elementary social studies curriculum with business and economics related skills and concepts. How I did my 15 hours of engagement with persons with disabilities was twice a week for one hour, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, for 8 weeks I would go to Avalon Elementary and teach Mr. Kelly's kindergarten class. Every week I would teach the students something new about business and economics.

IDEA:

IDEA Since I was working with kindergarteners the age range was about 4-5 years old. The ethnic backgrounds were very diverse, I would say that every ethnic background was represented. I worked with a little girl named Isabella with autism. I was not in a special needs class but she would participate in the hour that I was there teaching the students.

Service in Action:

Service in Action On this slide, use pictures that show you engaged in service activities with the participants you just mentioned. Explain what’s happening. Remember that you must have permission from staff/parents before taking pictures. Check with your host site for guidelines. If photography is restricted or limited, use alternatives like exterior pictures of the facility, long-range group shots, or pre-approved pictures from the organization’s own collection or website. You can also incorporate photos of yourself and the materials you used.

Perceptions of Differences:

Perceptions of Differences Made me realize that there are so many children that where they go to school or where they do therapy are based on volunteers. Working with persons with disabilities taught me that these children are all so different, they have different personalities that make them who they are. Who they are is just beautiful.

Connections to EEX 4070 :

Connections to EEX 4070 For what EEX course were you enrolled in Teachers in Action ? What three course topics do you better understand now? Be sure to name three concepts, explain each briefly (cite text where appropriate), and provide a concrete example from your service activities for each topic. In short, explain how you better understand course content due to your experience. How might these experiences inform your future studies or professional work? The concepts I have learned in EEX 4070 have really helped me throughout the Teachers in Action project. The concepts that taught me a lot were UDL, Strategies for Teaching and Learning and Behavior.

Civic Engagement:

Civic Engagement Being civically engaged is something that gives you an experience like no other. Some purposes of civic engagement including those with disabilities is that it gets you out of your comfort zone. You help a person or a non- profit organization that is solely based on volunteers succeed and actually accomplish there mission. I would encourage students and teachers to try this service- learning project because it’s a twist on what you would regularly learn in a classroom, you actually apply what you’re learning instead of just keeping it bottled up in your brain.

Final Thoughts & Reflections:

Final Thoughts & Reflections I would encourage all students to do service-learning or even volunteering. Something that I am planning on doing is going volunteering with a group of friends at a horse ranch where disabled children go for therapy and hopefully my friends will see how important it is to do service- learning. It has strengthened me so much and taught me so many things that I really am glad to be able to have this opportunities. It opened a whole new door for me.
