My Story - Why I go to Sunday School:

My Story - Why I go to Sunday School By Jamen Grinnen

2 Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear. Thomas Jefferson

3 I first heard this quote several years ago, before I started attending the Bowmansdale , Church of God. It appealed to me because I always like to know why I have a position, rather than just having it.

4 My story When I first started to attend Church, I attended the services. I felt good about our Church, like my spiritual reservoir was being replenished; the week would take it out of me, the hour would fill me up. My previous church experiences were limited to the Sunday service hour, and since I was finally feeling some of this church feeling that I heard about, but never previously felt, I felt fulfilled.

5 Introduction to Sunday School My wife was also feeling fulfilled, so much so that she wanted to become more involved. The easiest way for her was to start attending Sunday School. I told her to go ahead, but I wasn’t interested…I already went for one hour of service, what else was I going to learn? For a while, this arrangement worked well. She would get up and go to Sunday School, I would get an extra hour of sleep and meet her for service. Over lunch we would discuss the service and she would tell me about the topics that were discussed in Sunday School. Often times I was surprised by the depth of discussions or topics that she described. It was an entirely different experience from the service. The topics they were discussing were interesting, and she said there was active discussion of competing viewpoints. As wives sometimes do, she “encouraged” me to check it out. After a couple months of “encouragement”, I relented. By this point our oldest boy was keeping me from sleeping in anyway, so I figured I would check it out.

6 Attending Sunday School So there I was, I always like to start a story with “so there I was”, it creates suspense. So there I was, in Sunday School. I knew the people there, but felt awkward. I wasn’t sure what I doing there, I didn’t know the Bible enough to discuss, I was out of my element. So I did what everyone does, I sat down and kept my mouth shut. My awkwardness quickly began to melt away. I was surprised how comfortable the discussion was, how it flowed, how differing points of view were voiced. It was a group of friends having a guided philosophical discussion of on the topics of Church. It was honest discussion, honest debate. I was excited, it wasn’t the groupthink I was expecting. What really surprised me is how quickly I learned new information. I had so many outstanding religious questions floating around in my head, that were never really discussed during normal services. During Sunday School, I found that many of my brothers and sisters had the same questions. It blew me away that I wasn’t alone, and I was finally able to find answers!

7 Epilogue When I first started to attend Church, I attended the services. I was felt good about our Church, like my spiritual reservoir was being replenished; the week would take it out of me, the hour would fill me up. While that was good, I was always just getting back to par. I never got ahead. Since I started attending Sunday School, my spiritual reservoir is filled to capacity and running over. I feel fulfilled in ways I never anticipated. I would love to share this fulfillment with you. Why not give it a try? Have your own “so there I was” moment. Maybe it will be the day you go from being filled, to overflowing.
