Jesus sent by the Father to all mankind:

Jesus sent by the Father to all mankind John 1:[10] He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.[11] He came unto his own, and his own received him not.[12 ] But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name

Jesus sent by the Father to all mankind:

Jesus showed that God ministered outside Israel:

Jesus showed that God ministered outside Israel Luke 4:25] But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;[26] But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.[27] And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

Jesus reached out to the Samaritans:

Jesus reached out to the Samaritans The woman at the well The story of the good Samaritan The 10 lepers who were healed, but only the Samaritan returned to give thanks

Jesus healed gentiles:

Jesus reaching to the Greeks before His death:

Jesus reaching to the Greeks before His death Jn. 12[24] Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.[25] He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.[26] If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

The great commission:

The great commission In the O.T., God used Israel as a model to call people to Him. The message of Israel was “come”. In the New Testament, God uses the church as an instrument to go seek and save those who are lost. The message to the church is “go”.

The great commission…:

The great commission… Matthew presents Jesus as the King of the Jews, and presents the commission in that light

Matthew – the King of the Jews.:

Matthew – the King of the Jews. The power of the King - all authority The purpose of the King - make disciples The precept of the King - going...baptizing...teaching The presence of the King - I am with you always The King of the universe sends His ambassadors throughout the world. No one or nothing can stop Him in what He does

Matthew – the focus is to make disciples:

Matthew – the focus is to make disciples Making disciples is the central focus- we should resemble Him. II Cor. 3:18; I Jn. 3:2 Christ is the maker of disciples. He says: Follow me; take up your cross.

Matthew – the focus is to make disciples:

Matthew – the focus is to make disciples Follow - come after who goes ahead; imitate an example, to believe and trust in, to side or take part with; to endeavor after; to die with one Leave former associations, and humbly submit to Jesus Take up your cross - all are to be disciples

Take up your cross…:

Take up your cross… Voluntary Daily Absolutely necessary for discipleship Not pleasing our old self - associated with self-denial Taken up for the sake of Christ

The great commission – Mark:

The great commission – Mark Method - preaching Scope - the world (to every creature) all nations, every tribe, every tongue The message - the gospel

The great commission – Luke:

The great commission – Luke Revelational foundation - the entire OT scriptures Content of the gospel - death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ The charge - preach repentance and remission of sins

The great commission – Luke:

The great commission – Luke Scope - among all nations Instrument - ye are witnesses Dynamic - the promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit

The message of Luke:

The message of Luke It behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead on the third day - this He did for us Repentance and remission of sins should be preached in Christ’s name among all nations - this He does in us

The message of Luke:

The message of Luke The Christian life can only be lived in and through the Holy Spirit. There is suffering, persecution, distresses and reproaches for Christ’s sake. The world, Satan, and the flesh are our enemies. The Holy Spirit gives endurance and victory

The great commission in John:

The great commission in John Orientation - As the Father has sent Commissioning - So send I you Equipment - receive the Holy Spirit Mission - remit sins

The great commission – Summary::

The great commission – Summary: Christ’s mission was not finished; He continually abides; the disciples are to carry on His work - not begin a new work. Jesus sent the disciples into a hostile world which hated Him and His message and killed Him to declare forgiveness, mercy, love and peace to those who will accept the message. His presence will sustain them as the Father’s presence sustained Him…

The great commission – Summary::

The great commission – Summary: We are not working for Christ, but with Christ The life and work of the disciple must be accomplished only through the Holy Spirit Zach. 4:6b not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit saith the Lord of hosts.

The great commission – Summary::

The great commission – Summary: Remission of sins - not that the disciples could forgive and atone for sins, but that they could preach the gospel to bring to every life the possibility of forgiveness and liberation of life. So the church can remit or retain sins - she retains if she fails to spread the gospel

The great commission – Summary::

The great commission – Summary: The church’s responsibility is to preach the gospel. She will be bitterly opposed, or tempted to get into side issues which are not central

The great commission – Summary::

The great commission – Summary: Identification with the Lord in His mission, Dependence on the Holy Spirit for the mission, Reliance upon the gospel of Jesus Christ to accomplish the mission

The great commission – Summary::

The great commission – Summary: Jesus promises to be with us in this task to the end of the age (occupy till I come - Lk. 19:13. Jesus never said anything about terminating this task... .Sending is still valid .Jn. 20:21 - send is active present (continuous action) .Romans 10:12-15

The great commission – What we need: :

The great commission – What we need: Absolute loyalty to the Word, Complete devotion to the Lord, Unreserved obedience to and reliance on the Holy Spirit, Determination to complete the task!

Paul’s burden should be our burden too…:

Paul’s burden should be our burden too… What about the church? Do we think that we are doing the heathen a great favor giving out the gospel, and should be praised and honored - or is it a duty which we dare not ignore? It is a debt, and not charity. We must do our utmost to pay our debt.

Paul’s burden and method:

Paul’s burden and method Paul preached the gospel - the good news that Jesus died for sinners to save them from hell. Paul wanted to reach the lost - where the gospel was not yet preached, and reached an amazing amount of territory Paul maintained a great passion for souls

Paul’s suffering…:

Paul’s suffering… Paul shared in Christ’s sufferings! Phil. 3:10 the fellowship of His sufferings... Note Christ’s words to Ananias in Acts 9:16 “I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name’s sake”

Paul’s suffering…:

Paul’s suffering… Suffering is not incidental in missions, but an integral part of the job. Jesus, the greatest missionary, was the greatest sufferer. He warned us that if the persecuted Him, they would persecute us too... (Jn. 15:20) When we carefully examine the facts, the persecution usually ends up being a great blessing. (Think of the death of Stephen)

Missions and the second coming of Christ:

Missions and the second coming of Christ All the gospels are linked somehow with Christ’s return This is even clearer in Acts 1 One mistake is to see the commission too small - confine ourselves to our area, our people, our group, etc. One mistake is to make the commission too large - that the entire world will be converted. No - we are to be witnesses

Missions and the second coming of Christ:

Missions and the second coming of Christ We are in the dispensation of grace. When all the world has been witnessed to, we can expect the Lord to return, rapture the church, and (after the time of tribulation), begin the time of the kingdom.

Missions and the second coming of Christ:

Missions and the second coming of Christ Jesus left saying: I have finished the work that Thou gavest me to do. Will the Holy Spirit say the same? His task is worldwide evangelization! Since those alive will be dead in another generation, it must be possible for one generation to reach all the various tribes and groups - not that all will be saved, but that some will be saved.

We need to recognize that the lost are truly lost:

We need to recognize that the lost are truly lost The “sincere” will not be saved because of their sincerity The cost of rejection of God’s plan of salvation through Christ’s sacrifice in our place is HELL Men will be judged by the amount of light they have, but there is no salvation apart from Jesus Christ

Eight propositions concerning missions:

Eight propositions concerning missions 1. The universal provision of the cross 2. The revelation of man’s lost condition 3. The exclusive claims of the gospel 4. The sovereign command of God 5. The magnitude of the task remaining 6. Time is short 7. It is a personal command 8. It is for the glory of God

The universal provision of the cross:

The universal provision of the cross II Cor. 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge; that if one died for all, then were all dead; I Jn. 2:2 He is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world All have died; Christ died for all, but each must accept the payment

The universal provision of the cross:

The universal provision of the cross Romans 10:14-15a How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed: and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent….

The revelation of man’s lost condition:

The revelation of man’s lost condition Mt. 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels Mt. 25:46…And these shall go away into everlasting punishment Revelation 14:11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever and they have no rest day nor night…

The revelation of man’s lost condition:

The revelation of man’s lost condition Revelation 20:10, 15 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever…. And whosoever was not found in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire

The exclusive claims of the gospel:

The exclusive claims of the gospel Jn. 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me Mt. 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat; because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

The exclusive claims of the gospel:

The exclusive claims of the gospel Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved I Jn. 1:7b The blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanseth us from all sin

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission:

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission Mt 28:18-20 All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world (age)

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission:

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission Complete authority from Jesus Here is the strategy – go, make disciples, baptize them, and teach Be certain that He is always available throughout then entire age as our help This is our methodology

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission:

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission Mk. 16:15 Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature This is the scope of our mission

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission:

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission Lk. 24:46-47 Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission from sins should be preached in his name among all nations This is the content of our mission preaching

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission:

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission Jn. 20:21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. Again, this is the authority of our mission (see also Mt. 28:18-20

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission:

The sovereign command of God –the Great Commission Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. This is the power of our commission

The magnitude of the task::

The magnitude of the task: Mt. 9:36-38 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then said he unto his disciples: The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into His harvest Approx. 7,000,000,000 souls alive today!

The hour is late…:

The hour is late… Jn. 4:35 Say ye not, there are yet four months, and then cometh the harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest It is harvest season The crop is ready The crop is dying The time for harvest soon will be past

There is a personal command in the great commission:

There is a personal command in the great commission Acts 1:8 …ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon me, and ye shall be witnesses unto me We are witnesses. That is not the question, if we are saved The question is – what kind of witnesses are we?

It is a task for every believer, not just the leaders:

It is a task for every believer, not just the leaders Ephesians 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying (growth in number as well as strength) of the body of Christ

The glory of God:

The glory of God Isaiah 42:8 I am the LORD; that is my name: and my name will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images…

World conversion, or World proclamation?:

World conversion, or World proclamation? Jesus Christ: Mt. 16:18… I will build my church…until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in (Rom. 11:25) This is the age of grace, of sowing and reaping. See Mt. 13, etc. There will be a mixture in this age of truth and error, of believers and unbelievers

Our work:

Our work To confront the world – every person – with the message of life – that Jesus forgives sins and gives eternal life Until Jesus returns, this is OUR task…

The conclusion of the task…:

The conclusion of the task… Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof; for thou was slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation…

Worthy is the Lamb:

Worthy is the Lamb Revelation 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues , stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;
