Snacks::

The good, the bad and the ugly Snacks:

Snack food :

Snack food A snack food (commonly called a snack) is seen in Western culture as a type of food not meant to be eaten as a main meal of the day – breakfast, lunch, or dinner – but one rather that is intended to assuage a person's hunger between these meals, providing a brief supply of energy for the body. The term may also refer to a food item consumed between meals purely for the enjoyment of its taste.

Snack foods are often subjectively classified as junk food; they have little or no nutritional value, and are not seen as contributing towards general health and nutrition. With growing concerns for diet, weight control and general health, government bodies like Health Canada are recommending that people make a conscious effort to eat more healthy, natural snacks – such as fruit, vegetables, nuts and cereal grains – while avoiding high-calorie, low-nutrient junk food.

Many people in Thailand enjoy eating insects as a snack food, often enjoyed with beer. They're usually fried in a wok, and seasoned with Golden Mountain sauce & a bit of Thai pepper powder. If you don't find street vendors selling fried insects, for sure you can always find them at Temple Fairs throughout Thailand.

Temple Fairs help raise money for the temple, and sometimes last a whole week whereby all kinds of food & clothing is sold, along with traditional entertainment. Temple Fairs are held by each temple about once a year, and they offer not only a glimpse into the real heart of Thai culture but also provide a certain venue for you find tasty fried insects for sale.

The Other Food Group--Don't Eat Too Much Sweet, salty, greasy, rich, or alcoholic foods are often called "junk foods." They have calories, but few vitamins and minerals, and little protein or fiber for good health. Sweets taste so good it's easy to eat too much. And, that can lead to becoming overweight—one of the causes of heart disease and diabetes. Sweets also cause tooth decay. To prevent tooth decay, brush teeth after eating. Sipping pop all day or snacking on sugary foods several times a day causes more tooth decay than eating sweets with a meal.

Hard to Resist Unhealthy Snacks Even if you intend to eat healthy, when faced with an unhealthy snack you're likely to go for it. Sweets and snacks — like cakes and cookies, or crackers and potato chips — are often high in saturated fat and cholesterol. So overdoing it can quickly sabotage your healthy eating plan. Try replacing bad-for-you munchies with moderate amounts of low-fat goodies

PowerPoint Presentation:

Fat-free or low-fat cookies like animal crackers, devil's food cookies, fig and other fruit bars, ginger snaps, and vanilla or lemon wafers Frozen low-fat or nonfat yogurt, fruit ices, ice milk, sherbet, and sorbet Gelatin desserts — watch the whipped cream! Graham crackers Puddings made with 1 percent or fat-free milk Just remember that while these treats may be low in fat, they probably aren’t low in calories. If you’re trying to control your weight as a way to improve your cholesterol, only eat these snacks occasionally — not every day.
