In 1947 Air Force was mainly used to transport the troops in Kashmir. IAF first major operation was peacekeeping operation in Congo in 1960. In 1961 IAF performed “OPERATION VIJAY” in Goa. In 1962 military planners failed to use IAF effectively against China. C-119 IK-457 1947 War

About IAF:

About IAF It is fourth largest Air Force in the World. It has a strength of 1,380 aircrafts including 680 combat aircrafts and 350 helicopters. It currently operates 34 squadrons. All these Aircrafts belong to 4.5 generations. The only 4.5 generation fighter craft developed by India is HAL-TEJAS . Currently Marshal of the Indian Air Force is Arjan Singh. IAF has 1,27,000 Personnel . Surya Kiran

Strength of IAF The main strength of IAF are Aircrafts which are divided into categories – Attackers Fighters

ATTACKERS:

ATTACKERS Attackers are aircrafts with primary role of attacking targets on the ground with greater precision than strategic bombers and prepared to face stronger low-level air defence. Main attackers of IAF are: Jaguar MiG 21 Bison MiG 27

JAGUAR:

JAGUAR A twin engine, single seater d eep penetration strike aircraft of Anglo-French origin which has maximum speed of 1350 km/hr.

MiG-21 Bison:

MiG-21 Bison Single engine, single seater ground attack air craft of R ussian origin which forms the backbone of the IAF. It has a maximum speed of 2230km/hr and carries one 23mm twin barrel cannon with four R-60 close combat missiles.

MiG-27:

MiG-27 Single engine , single seater tactical strike fighter aircraft of Russian origin having a max. speed of 1700km/hr. It carries one 23mm six barrel rotatory integral cannon and can carry up to 4000 kg of other armament externally.

FIGHTERS:

FIGHTERS A Fighter aircraft is a military aircraft which is designed primarily from air to air combat with other air craft, as supposed to a bomber, which is designed secondarily to attack ground targets by dropping bombs . Types of fighters in IAF are- Su- 30 Mirage-2000 MiG-29

Su-30:

Su-30 Twin seater ,twin engine multirole fighter of Russian origin which carries 130 mm GSH gun along with 8000kg external armament. It is capable of carrying a variety of medium-range guided air to air missiles. It has a maximum speed of 2500km/hr.

Mirage-2000:

Mirage-2000 A single seater air defense and multi-role fighter of French origin powered by a single engine can attain max speed of 2495 km/hr. It carries 30mm integral cannons and two mantra super 530D medium–range and two R-550 magic II close combat missiles on external stations.

MiG-29:

MiG-29 Twin engine, single seater air superiority fighter aircraft of Russian origin, capable of attaining max. speed of 2445 km/hr. It has a combat celling of 17km. It carries a 30mm cannon along with four R-60 close combat and two R-27 R medium range radar guided missiles.

CHOPPERS:

CHOPPERS SARANG Light weight Helicopters. Able to perform stunts in air. Active from October 2003. Mi-26 It is Largest and most Powerful helicopter ever. Active from 1986. Mi-17 Russian helicopter. Twin-turbine helicopter Can act as gunship.

Project MMRCA:

Project MMRCA The Indian Air Force Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA). Commonly known as MRCA Tender , was the competition to supply the IAF with 126 Multi-Role Combat Aircraft. French Company Dassault Aviation’s Rafale won the bid. Dassault Rafale
