Welcome Welcome to the South Plains College Distance Education Orientation. Our goal is to give you an idea of what it takes to be successful in an Online or ITV college course.

Welcome You may have taken college courses before, and perhaps you have taken an ITV, hybrid or fully online course as well.

What to expect: : 

What to expect: Online Courses in General: Online courses have the reputation of being harder to complete. The content of the course is no harder than a face to face course, but many students misjudge what it will take to be successful.

What to expect: : 

What to expect: Internet courses trade the convenience of being flexible with class times/ location and require more individual effort.

What to expect: : 

What to expect: Internet students have to be far more self motivated than classroom students. There is no set time to remind you of what you need to be doing. You have to know what needs to be done and do it on your own. Instead of listening to a lecture and taking notes, you are often given reading to sort through.

What to expect: : 

What to expect: Internet courses in general require a great deal more reading than your standard face to face course.

What to expect: : 

What to expect: Having at least minimal proficient computer skills is a must. That means that you must be able to operate the computer, type, and be able to navigate the internet.

What to expect: : 

What to expect: You must be able to work email, and trouble shoot small problems. If you cannot attach a file to an email, then you probably need a basic computer course before attempting an online or ITV course.

Expectations : 

Expectations Professors Expectations: Log in and check on things regularly (once or more per day) Know all the requirements that need to be met for the course.

Expectations Do all assigned work Turn in assignments ahead of time (not 15 seconds before the timer runs out!)

Expectations Dedicate at least the same amount of time to an online course as if were sitting in a classroom. Show effort on your assignments. Your professors are professional educators; they can tell when you put ten minutes worth

Expectations You can expect an instructor to: Respond to your questions related to course material. Follow through with the guide lines as set forth in the syllabus.

Expectations Expect you to work hard to achieve the grade you desire. Not accept excuses. Many instructors will not acknowledge technical difficulty as a reason for not doing your work.

Campus Connect Chances are you have already had exposure to Campus Connect.

Campus Connect Campus Connect is the SPC registration system, and is used by all advisors and students to register for classes and keep track of student data.

Campus Connect : 

Campus Connect Its not the purpose of this orientation to assist with learning Campus Connect. The system will be referenced several during this orientation. If you require further training on Campus Connect you are encouraged to seek it.

TSI Testing : 

TSI Testing What is TSI? The Texas Success Initiative is a state program designed to enhance a students opportunity for success in their college studies.

TSI Testing : 

TSI Testing The program requires that students entering college be tested to see that they are prepared for college- level work that is considered reading, writing or math intensive.

WebCT : 

WebCT If you have never had a WebCT delivered course you need to take the time to get familiar with the tools.

WebCT : 

WebCT Some instructors may require an orientation to WebCT as part of their course just to make sure that you have to skills to complete the course.

Credit Hours & Grading : 

Credit Hours & Grading A credit hour is a basic measure of instruction. Students earn hours towards a degree by completing courses.

Credit Hours & Grading A level students are expected in traditional classed to spend twice as much time studying and completing work outside of class. (2.5*2 = 5hours + original 2.5)

Credit Hours & Grading So a student would need to spend about 7 ½ - 8 hours per week on a 3 hour course.

Credit Hours & Grading To calculate how long it will take you to achieve your academic goals at your current rate use the following:

GPA To calculate your GPA: Step 1: Credit hour of the Class X Grade Point for the class

GPA : 

GPA A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 Anything else = 0

GPA : 

GPA Step2: Add up the total grade points and divide by the total number of hours. Or search for a GPA calculator online.

Money Business Office It is critically important that you pay careful attention to payment details and manage your affairs carefully. The review/pay account feature in Campus Connect should have not only your bill, but information and options on payment.
