Program Outline:

The Program The educational sessions include but are not limited to the following topics: The Cost Benefits of Quitting Physical Effects (Short and Long Term) Education Quitting Strategies (Setting Your Quit Date) Tools & Resources to aid you in quitting

There are 6 educational sessions , each lasting approximately 1 hour . The sessions will take place every other week . 1 required visit with the Doctors Care nurse A few additional hours throughout the course of the program will be dedicated to some take home assignments. About 9-10 hours . Time Commitment

Your one-on-one session will be your time with the nurse to discuss a quit plan that’s right for you. This may or may not include nicotine replacement therapies, such as gum or a patch, or medications such as Chantix or Wellbutrin. :

Quit Date:

All participants will be required to choose a quit date. Each participant will sign a Quit Date Contract once they have chosen their date. Quit Date

Effects of Nicotine on the Body. When a person smokes a cigarette, the body responds immediately to nicotine in the smoke. Nicotine causes a short – term increase in blood pressure, heart rate and the flow of blood from the heart. It also causes the arteries to narrow. The smoke includes carbon monoxide, which reduces the amount of oxygen the blood can carry.

This, combined with the nicotine effects, creates an imbalance between the demand for oxygen by the cells and the amount of oxygen the blood can supply. There are receptors for nicotine in your brain. When you smoke, the nicotine you inhale attaches to these receptors. This sends a message to a different part of your brain to release a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine gives you a feeling of pleasure, but it does not last long. Pregnant women who breathe secondhand smoke have many risks: They may lose their babies. Their babies may be born small. Their babies are more likely to die of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Their children may be cranky, restless, and get sick more often. Their children are more likely to have learning problems. Children who breathe secondhand smoke: Are more likely to have breathing problems such as asthma. They also get more ear and lung infections (like pneumonia).
