Religion –Swami Vivekananda :

Religion –Swami Vivekananda Religion is the manifestation of Divinity already in man. Religion does not consist in talk, or doctrines or books, but in realisation; it is not learning but being. It is its own end. That religion which is only a means to worldly well-being is not religion, whatever else it may be.

Slide 2:

Religion is one, but its application must be various. Religion is science and has its methods. These are called ‘Yoga’. These methods must be adapted to the different natures and temperaments of men. ‘Joto math tato path’-as many minds so many paths. Basically minds can be classified as emotional, rational, active and mystic.

Four kinds of minds :

Four kinds of minds

Slide 4:

Active mind – Karma Yoga Emotional mind – Bhakti Yoga Mystical mind – Raja Yoga Rational mind- Jnana Yoga

Yoga- its meaning and scope :

Yoga- its meaning and scope Derived from the root word rÉÑÎeÉUç rÉÉåaÉå meaning ‘to join’. Also can be derived as rÉÑeÉ xÉqÉÉkÉÉæ meaning Samadhi. Entirely a spiritual concept.

Karma Yoga :

Karma Yoga It is the manner in which a man realizes his own divinity through works and duty. How does Karma or any work influence our character? Nature of an ideal man according to Karma Yoga.

Slide 7:

It is a scheme of gradual growth – from selfish work to unselfishly working like a master. In this society, doing one’s duty unselfishly leads him/her to the highest goal i.e, seeing Truth face to face by purification of mind. Duty for duty’s sake or work for work’s sake is the real mechanics: * sets goal definitively; * limits selfishness there by saves lot of energy; * requires love to lubricate the wheel of duty;

Slide 8:

* attenuates our lower self so that our higher self shines on itself. Things to remember in practicing Karma Yoga: Beware of each of your action (including thought). Each is great in his own place. World does not require you; but that is you who require this world! Unselfishness is God.

Can be applied to people from all walks of life :

Can be applied to people from all walks of life

Bhakti Yoga :

Bhakti Yoga No man can be found who doesn’t love something. Love is man’s natural state. Easiest and the most natural way to reach the goal. Bhakti Yoga is a real, genuine search after the Lord, a search beginning, continuing and ending in love. Is attraction between any two persons can really be called as love?

Gradations in love :

Gradations in love 1. Preparatory stage of love grosser and the kindergarten of religion. 2. Supreme stage of love finest and an end in itself.

Preparatory stage of love :

Preparatory stage of love Need for a personal God- can be called Ishwara or the Ruler supreme-becomes the chosen ideal. Need for certain rituals, symbols to worship him. Need for a teacher. Selfish in nature.

Supreme stage of love :

Supreme stage of love When the preparatory stage matures and selfishness vanishes love for love’s sake arises. Worldly relationship can be converted and sublimated towards Lord: * Filial attitude, friendly attitude, servile attitude, lover attitude and soul attitude.

Raja Yoga-charm of the Indian psychology :

Raja Yoga-charm of the Indian psychology Science of finding the source of peace by the systematic training of the mind. Annihilation of the modifications of mind is the goal. Mind is the most powerful object in the world……for the one who has mastered it! How to make it powerful and attain highest knowledge and peace?

Eight steps to scale that height :

Eight steps to scale that height *Annihilation of mind * Meditation * Holding in a place * Bringing back the mind * Breath control * Yogic postures/ Asanas * 5 additional disciplines * 5 moral disciplines

Powers from concentration :

Powers from concentration Concentrating on: * word, meaning and knowledge-knowledge of all animal sounds; * on the sun-the knowledge of the world; * on the hollow of the throat? cessation of hunger; * in the heart - knowledge of minds; * by conquering the Udana current -walking on water, thorns etc as his body becomes light;

Jnana Yoga- A Razor’s edge! :

Jnana Yoga- A Razor’s edge! Rational and very bold men like the Buddha- who couldn’t compromise with the futility of this world alone can tread this path. Questions everything- is this real? What is the value of this life? Realizes all miseries are caused because of not knowing one’s nature.
