PowerPoint Presentation:

Bobbin lace is the art of the hand made work, which is made on a lace pillow, filled by straw or sawdust, sat on a wooden stand. To make bobbin lace you need: a pillow, bobins, thread, a pattern, stainless pins and tracing paper.

Slovak laces are among the most original in their peasant designes and in their use of colourful threds. These lace display a wide range of colour to coordinate with the folk costumes and household linens. The first lace-making centres in Slovakia were in mining regions like Banska Stiavnica and Kremnica. Later, peddlers carried the laces all through the country, and the agricultural class accepted them as an important part of their culture and started to produce the laces themselves. First information about lacemaking appeared in 16th century. At this time it was very popular.

Lace was mostly used to join the parts of cloth, for example on tablecloths, the sleeves of shirts, to decorate the edge of aprons, collars, dress, wedding towels. It was wery popular as a bonnet edging. Adorned bonnets were very important for women. They usually had one for causual wearing, and one as Sunday best, that they wore to the church. The women used to compete, whose bonnet is the nicest. Anyway, all of them were very sophisticated

How do we make the lace:

How do we make the lace Wind up the thread on the bobbins. We always use bobbins in pairs. There are two different movements of bobbins in the formation of the lace: the twist and the cross.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Firstly pin the paper with the pattern to the pillow. Wound the bobbins and hung them on the starting pins. Lace is made up of lots of stitches. Each stitch is made up either cloth stitch or a bobbin half stitch. To make the stitch, you lift one bobbin over another. The threads follow the bobbins.

PowerPoint Presentation:

If you want to make more complicated patterns, use more than one pair of bobbins. Pin the thread at the edges, according to the pattern. A pin will go tbetween two threads. You always tighten up the threads at a pin.

PowerPoint Presentation:

The technique of lace making is still popular. There are various courses not only for adults and also for children.
