Arise Let Us Build Faithful Servant Leadership

Slide2:

Titus 1:5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you--

Points to Ponder:

Points to Ponder Who is the head of the Church? What role did the apostles play in the Church? What “offices” did Jesus give the Church? What function did these “offices” play in the church? What was one of the first departures from The Faith? Where did that departure lead? What about congregational autonomy?

The Faithful Servant Head:

The Faithful Servant Head Christ is the Head of the Church Ephesians 1:22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body , the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

The Faithful Servant Apostles:

The Faithful Servant Apostles The Apostles had Apostolic Authority John 16:13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth ; Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

The Faithful Servant Apostles:

The Faithful Servant Apostles There is a Pattern for Church Leadership! Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

Faithful Servant Leaders:

Faithful Servant Leaders Eph 4:11-14 And He Himself gave some to be apostles , some prophets , some evangelists , and some pastors and teachers , 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine . . .

How Many Elders in a Congregation? :

How Many Elders in a Congregation? There Must Be At Least Two YES! YES! NO!!!

God requires more than one elder!:

God requires more than one elder! 1Pet 5:1-3 The elders who are among you I exhort. . . Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers , not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock;

God requires more than one elder!:

God requires more than one elder! Php 1:1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Ac 20:17 From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. Tit 1:5 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you--

God requires more than one elder!:

God requires more than one elder! Ac 14:23 And when they had ordained them elders in every church , and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed. Jas 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him,

God requires more than one elder!:

God requires more than one elder! God does NOT approve of One Man Rule ! Scripture NEVER speaks of one man being over a congregation. There is always a plurality of Elders over each congregation.

Why More Than One?:

Why More Than One? 1. Balances Influence. 2. Increases Wisdom. 3. Maintains Humility. 4. More Work Accomplished.

"For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Paul to the Ephesians Acts 20:29:

"For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Paul to the Ephesians Acts 20:29 Departure from the Faith Church Leadership

The New Testament Pattern:

The New Testament Pattern Autonomous Local Congregations Plurality of Elders in Each Congregation No Elder Elevated Above Other Elders

The Church Departs from God’s Pattern:

The Church Departs from God’s Pattern One Elder Elevated Above Other Elders and Becomes the Bishop

The Church Departs from God’s Pattern:

The Church Departs from God’s Pattern One Bishop elevated above many congregations Congregations begin to loose Autonomy

The Church Departs from God’s Pattern:

The Church Departs from God’s Pattern Eventually one man came to be head over the entire “church.” This man was called Papa (Pope).

The Church Departs from God’s Pattern:

The Church Departs from God’s Pattern Some Shall Depart From the Faith! 1 Tim 4:1 Would Jesus Have Approved of This?

Congregational Autonomy:

Congregational Autonomy Auto – self Nomos – law/rule

Autonomy Has Limitations:

Autonomy Has Limitations YES NO Congregation does ONLY those thing the Bible Authorizes. Congregation makes decision without approval of sister congregations. Leaders Lording it Over their Congregation. Leaders Doing Anything They Want. Leaders Ignoring God’s Word.

The New Testament Pattern:

The New Testament Pattern Brotherhood 1 Pet 2:17 Autonomous Congregations Connected By the Word of God

What About Congregational Autonomy?:

What About Congregational Autonomy? Each Congregation is “self governed.” Each congregation has its own scriptural leaders. One congregation CANNOT interfere with another congregation. Leaders in one congregation have NO Authority over another congregation and may not control them.

Man’s Way vs. God’s Way:

Man’s Way vs. God’s Way Man’s Way God’s Way Mother Church F S L E A

Man’s Way vs. God’s Way:

Man’s Way vs. God’s Way Man’s Way God’s Way One Church Controls Another Centralized Headquarters Men control more than one group Unscriptural Hierarchy Manmade Creeds and Laws Money sent to Mother Church Each Church is Autonomous No Headquarters No Mother Church No Hierarchy Bible Only Money used on a local level

What about Congregational Autonomy?:

What about Congregational Autonomy? Some things to Consider Corinth never interfered with Ephesus. Jerusalem did not interfere with Galatia Churches. Elders of Philippi never interfered with Colossae. Each Congregation is Connected by their Love for the Lord and Obedience to His Word.

Example of Sinful Organization:

The Benefits of Scriptural Organization:

The Benefits of Scriptural Organization It puts Christ in charge. When there is a hierarchy men take control. It helps stop the spread of false doctrine. Autonomous congregations can say “NO” to each other. It elevates God’s Word over Man’s Word. No centralized headquarters given their own laws. It allows congregations to address their own local needs. How can one area know the needs of another area? It allows for more members to serve and take ownership of the congregation in their area. There is no motivation if rules come from men in another location.
