Arise Let Us Build:

Arise Let Us Build Lessons from Nehemiah and the rebuilding of Jerusalem

Considering the Topic:

Considering the Topic The Theme is from Nehemiah The Teaching is timeless The Truths are self evident The Treasure is eternal

The Background:

The Background End of the 70 yr Babylonian Captivity Decree of Cyrus (538 B.C.) Zerubbabel has returned to build the temple Artaxerxes is king (445 B.C.) Nehemiah returns to rebuild the city When Nehemiah gets there is finds a mess!

Nehemiah: Kings Cupbearer:

Nehemiah: Kings Cupbearer A cup-bearer was an officer of high rank in royal courts, whose duty it was to serve the drinks at the royal table. On account of the constant fear of plots and intrigues, a person must be regarded as thoroughly trustworthy to hold this position. He must guard against poison in the king's cup, and was sometimes required to swallow some of the wine before serving it. His confidential relations with the king often gave him a position of great influence . “For I was the king's cupbearer ” Neh 1:11

The Crisis:

The Crisis Ne 1:1-4 The words of Nehemiah …..one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem . 3 And they said to me, "The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire .“

The Crisis:

The Crisis Nehemiah: Heart for God’s people – He Inquired Diligently Hurt for God’s people – He Identified Directly Honored God’s people – He Initiated Decidedly God Needs People of Decision not Duplicity!

The Crisis:

The Crisis Practical Considerations Every generation faces a Spiritual Crisis! Each has the responsibility to see the need! We must have an empathy for God’s cause and his people like Nehemiah did. Identifying the crisis is only half the job. We must do something about the crisis!

The Confession :

The Confession Ne 1:5 -7,11 So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. And I said: "I pray, LORD God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your commandments , "please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against You. Both my father's house and I have sinned . O Lord, I pray, please let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who desire to fear Your name; and let Your servant prosper this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man." For I was the king's cupbearer.

The Confession:

The Confession Nehemiah: Praised God’s faithfulness and greatness Petitioned God on behalf of his sin and others sins. Prostrated himself in mourning & fasting

The Confession:

The Confession Practical Considerations God deserves praise even in times of crisis. God is a God of Covenant! He NEVER forsakes! Until we are willing to be broken God cannot fill us. Until we take the church’s failures personally we will never work like we should for God.

The Commission:

The Commission Ne 2:1 -5 And it came to pass in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, that I took the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had never been sad in his presence before . 2 Therefore the king said to me, "Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart." So I became dreadfully afraid , 3 and said to the king, "May the king live forever! Why should my face not be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' tombs, lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire ?“ 4 Then the king said to me, "What do you request?" So I prayed to the God of heaven . 5 And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' tombs, that I may rebuild it."

The Commission:

The Commission Nehemiah: Embodied the pain– Showed his sadness Explained the problem – Shared his situation Engaged the project – Sacrificed his station Nehemiah Sacrificed Comfort! Nehemiah Sacrificed Status!

The Commission:

The Commission Practical Considerations God’s cause must affect us viscerally and deeply God does not want lukewarm servants (Rev 3:16) Nehemiah had authority for ALL he did God will supply ALL our needs if we “rise up.” We must be willing to sacrifice job and comforts.

Points to Ponder:

The Community:

The Community Nehemiah stakes a survey by night: So I came to Jerusalem and was there three days . 12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me; I told no one what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem; nor was there any animal with me, except the one on which I rode . 13 And I went out by night through the Valley Gate to the Serpent Well and the Refuse Gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which were burned with fire . 14 Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool, but there was no room for the animal under me to pass . 15 So I went up in the night by the valley, and viewed the wall; then I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned . 16 And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I had done; I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, or the others who did the work. (2:11 - 16)

The Community:

The Community Nehemiah: Secretly Surveyed – Discretely Discovered Secured Servants – Divided Difficulty Safeguarded Security – Deflected Danger Therefore I positioned men behind the lower parts of the wall, at the openings; and I set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows . (4:13)

The Community:

The Community The Leaders Lead! After Nehemiah returned from his night investigation the nobles said, " Let us rise up and build." Then they set their hands to this good work . (2:18)

The Community:

The Community The People Participated! Ne 3:1-2 Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests and built the Sheep Gate; they consecrated it and hung its doors. …2 Next to Eliashib the men of Jericho built. And next to them Zaccur the son of Imri built…. Even the High Priest Stooped to Helped!

The Community:

The Community An Attitude of Accomplished Ne 4:6 So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, F or the people had a mind to work. EVERYONE GOT INVOLVED!!! 52 days did the job!!!

The Community:

The Community Practical Considerations A community is only as strong as its leaders Leaders must be servants. Every person in the church has a job. Cooperation is necessary in the body We must have a “mind” to work Talent Will Not Overcome Laziness!!!

Points to Ponder:

Points to Ponder The Crisis The Confession The Commission The Community The Conflict The Consecration

The Conflict:

The Conflict Ne 2:19 But when Sanballat the Horonite , Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they laughed at us and despised us, and said, "What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king ?“ Ne 4:3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, "Whatever they build, if even a fox goes up on it, he will break down their stone wall."

The Conflict:

The Conflict Ne 6:1-3 Now it happened when Sanballat , Tobiah , Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall(they) … sent to me, saying, "Come, let us meet together among the villages in the plain of Ono." But they thought to do me harm . 3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?"

The Conflict:

The Conflict Nehemiah: Remembered Priorities No Chaotic Tasks Refused to Patronize No Cheap Talk Responded to Problems No Conflict Timidity

The Conflict:

The Conflict Practical Considerations There WILL be enemies of God’s work The enemy will: Insult us – even if a fox goes up the wall will fall. Isolated us - you’re not on board with the times. Involve us in their schemes – hey let’s have a talk. There will be internal and external threats We must keep our eye on the GREAT WORK

The Consecration:

The Consecration Ne 8:1 Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel . 2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month . 3 Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law . 4 So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose… 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people… and when he opened it, all the people stood up . 6 And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. Then all the people answered, "Amen, Amen!" while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

The Consecration:

The Consecration Ezra the Scribe: Watergate Revival Showed UP Word Revealed Stood UP Word Respected Listened UP Worship Resulted BOWED DOWN

The Consecration:

The Consecration Practical Considerations Every Good Work begins and ends with God God’s Word is necessary for continued success We must have an attitude of respect for the Word God’s Word must be Heard AND Obeyed! God’s Word will result in humility and worship No matter how successful any project seems to be the only assurance of continued success is to remain true to the Word of God!

A Concluding Challenge:

A Concluding Challenge 1. Rise up, O men of God! Have done with lesser things. Give heart and mind and soul and strength to serve the King of kings. 2. Rise up, O men of God! The kingdom tarries long. Bring in the day of brotherhood and end the night of wrong. 3. Rise up, O men of God! The church for you doth wait, her strength unequal to her task; rise up, and make her great! 4. Lift high the cross of Christ! Tread where his feet have trod. As brothers of the Son of Man, rise up, O men of God!
