Arise Let Us Build:

Arise Let Us Build The Pentecost Paradigm Six Building Blocks

Points to Ponder :

Points to Ponder The context for Acts 2 A vibrant church grows What can we learn from the attitude of the early church? What can we learn from the actions of the early church?

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm The Prediction of Jesus to build his church Mt 16:18-19 " And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 "And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm The Promise of Jesus to send the Holy Spirit Lu 24:44 46 Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day , 47 "and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem . 48 "And you are witnesses of these things. 49 " Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm The Portrait of Pentecost Believers together waiting in Jerusalem Sound of rushing wind Tongues of fire Great crowd gathers Peter’s sermon about Christ’s Death, Burial, Resurrection The crowd realizes that Jesus is The Christ The crowd’s cry for a solution to their sin! Ac 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved . (Acts 2:42-47 NKJV)

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Six BUILDING BLOCKS that made the early church flourish Accepted Apostolic Authority Adhered to the Apostles Doctrine Adored God in Worship Awe of God’s Power Abandoned Materialism Appreciated God’s Blessings Announced the Gospel to others.

Slide8:

Accepted Apostolic Authority Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Apostolic Authority The apostles were being guided into all truth: Christ Holy Spirit Apostles Words Epistles CHURCH Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Apostolic Authority God authorized apostles to lay down the doctrine of the church! Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers ; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ : 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ : 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Slide11:

Adhered to Doctrine Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Apostolic Doctrine D octrine – ( didach ) didache Teaching/instruction Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine Earnestly, diligent, persevere

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Apostolic Doctrine The Great Commission anticipated the importance of doctrine. Go! Teach! Baptize! Teach some more! Mt 28:19 " Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit , 20 " teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you ; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Apostolic Doctrine Scripture reveals the apostle’s doctrine! 2Ti 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness : 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Doctrine is being abandoned in the Churches of Christ . Too many Calvinistic writers being read Too many Internet sermons being copied Too many forsaking the traditional Hermeneutics Too many teachers leaving Doctrinal Basics Too many “feel good” sermons “mind candy.”

Slide16:

Adored God in Worship Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Worship Doctrine Fellowship Breaking of Bread Prayers Worship is the “heart” of the body of Christ!

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Worship John 4:23-24 " But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him . 24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Worship And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. ( Hebrews 10:24-25 NKJV)

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Worship Divine ordinances of corporate worship: Lord’s Supper Acts 20:7, 1 Cor 11 Teaching 1 Cor 14 Prayer 1 Cor 14 Singing Eph 5, Col 3 Giving 1 Cor 16 Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Worship provides: structured time to assemble structured time to praise connection with The Body opportunity for encouragement w orship is commanded!

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Worship: Problematic Trends Casual Worship – Come as you are!!!! “Normative Approach” – ie : any not forbidden is allowed! Innovations in the New Testament Pattern

Slide23:

Awe of God’s Power Acts 2:43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Respect Fear – ( fobov ) phobos (terror/respect/trembling) Proverbs 9:10 " The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Respect Who feared? The whole multitude Whom did they fear? Apostles, Signs Why did they fear? Realized they were in the presence of God!

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Respect A church will never be vibrant until it learns to fear God! God is not a “cosmic grandpa.” God is not our “buddy.” God’s word is His law. The church must forever stand at a reverential distance from the Father and approach Him through the Son, Jesus Christ!

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Respect A church will never be vibrant until it learns to fear God! Ways we show a lack of fear/respect: 1. Casual Worship Styles 2. Forsaking the assembly 3 . Casual participation in worship 4 . Deemphasizing of doctrine and hermeneutics

Slide28:

Abandoned Materialism Acts 2:44-45 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common , 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Attitude toward Materialism Many had come from a far and stayed after Pentecost! The early church was not communistic but it WAS communal! Wealth was voluntarily shared as others had needs. Acts 20:35 And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Attitude toward Materialism Acts 4:33-35 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. 34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles' feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Attitude toward Materialism A congregation’s attitude toward wealth will have a direct impact on its growth and its vibrancy! Will affect: 1. Evangelism and support of preachers 2. How we give to the Lord’s treasury 3. Personal hospitality to other members 4. With whom we associate etc.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Materialism is KILLING the Lord’s Church When we’d rather spend money on a grand vacation than on supporting preaching . . . When we reach for the credit card rather than saying no ! When we’d rather spend evenings at home with our “toys” than attend services . . . When we think we have to have the finest clothes to go to a brotherhood meeting . . . When we measure people based on wealth rather than their godliness . . .

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Attitude toward Materialism 1Tim 6:17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Attitude toward Materialism Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. ( 1 Timothy 6:6-10 NKJV)

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Attitude toward Materialism The early church held their wealth loosely in their hands! They realized they were only stewards of what God had given them.

Slide36:

Acclaimed God’s Blessings Acts 2:4 -47 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart , 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Joy and Praise Ac 2:46-47 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Joy and Praise Ate their food with . . . Gladness ( agalliasiv ) agalliasis Exultation, exceeding joy Simplicity of heart ( afelothv ) aphelotes Singleness, without a care Praising God ( ainew ) aineo Exalt, story of praise

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Joy and Praise A heart with such . . . Brings glory to God Demonstrates an understating of true blessings Is an encouragement to others Adorns the gospel of Christ

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Joy and Praise Christians have the ultimate reason to live fulfilled lives! Joy is the hallmark of the Christian life! In a world of sorrow Christians can win others to the joy of Christ. Php 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!

Slide41:

Evangelism Acts 2:40-41 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation . 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Evangelism Gospel: ( euaggelion ) - euaggelion The Good News 1Cor 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Evangelism Jesus gave the Great Commission Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Evangelism Peter used the “Keys of the Kingdom” to evangelize Acts 2:40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

The Pentecost Paradigm:

The Pentecost Paradigm Evangelism Each One Won One! Acts 8:4 Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.
