Presentation Description

These are the 'bones' upon which I delivered a presentation based on an assignment about Haiti, values, Biblical connections and personal stories. Authorstream says that because this was created on a Mac, there may be issues related to audio, font.... Hopefully, you can still ascertain the heart of the matter.

“The island is unmatched in all the world…a paradise on earth. ” “The Jewel of the Antilles.” “They are the best people in the world and above all the gentlest... All the people show the most singular loving behavior and they speak pleasantly... They love their neighbors as themselves, and they have the sweetest talk in the world, and are gentle and always laughing.” “They traded with us and gave us everything they had, with goodwill…they took great delight in pleasing us….” “They are very gentle and without knowledge of what is evil; nor do they murder or steal.” “…our highness may believe that in all the world there can be no better people.” “…they are very guileless and honest, and very liberal of all they have. No one refuses the asker anything that he possesses; on the contrary they themselves invite us to ask for it.”

I was in a conversation the other day where I was listening to two men talk about Haiti. One said, “It really is the armpit of the world.” The other replied, “It’s the hardest place that I’ve ever been: the dirtiest, saddest place on earth.” (Gardner, 2012 )

Community Conversations: HAITI:

Community Conversations: HAITI The first service that one owes to others in the fellowship consists of listening to them. Just as love of God begins with listening to his word, so the beginning of love for our brothers and sisters is learning to listen to them. Dietrich Bonhoeffer , Life Together

Michaella:

Michaella Last week I saw Michaelle running around with rocks in her hands. I started asking her what she was doing, and she looked at me with her big brown eyes and said, “There are two black birds.” I looked back at her and said, “Yes I see them, but what are you doing?” She answered back quickly, “Throwing rocks at them!” Photo credit:Megan Boudreaux

And once again, even more confused, I answered her back:  “Yes, I see, but WHY?” She finally paused for the first time, her beautiful brown eyes widening as she looked at me and said,   “To Eat!!” Then she turned around and kept throwing her rocks at the birds.:

Values, Goals and Aspirations:

Values, Goals and Aspirations Values: "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” Gandalf (or Tolkien)

Jobs and Work:

Jobs and Work After the earthquake, when I asked people how I could best pray for them, the # 1 answer was: “Pray I can find work.” ( Though they were living in parking lots under tarps and had no homes or food, WORK was deemed most critical.)

Biblical Story:

Biblical Story God agrees that work is good. The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. Genesis 2:15 Do you see a man skillful in his work ? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men. Proverbs 22:29 She seeks wool and flax, and work s with willing hands. Proverbs 31:13 Whoever work s his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense. Proverbs 12:11 They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. Isaiah 65:22

Fear, Mistrust and Envy:

Fear, Mistrust and Envy In Voodoo: Spirits must be appeased Human beings live in fear and deference to these spirits

Biblical Value:

Biblical Value Trust God- God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Numbers 23:19 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future . Jeremiah 29:11

Storytime:

Storytime The best friend of one of my Haitian friends did not tell him he was living in America until he had already moved there. There were no phone calls or good-bye’s until he was safely secured in the USA. He would not “ chance” his good fortune might be cursed or altered through “ voodoo magic” by telling anyone, even his closest friend, that he had been granted a green card to immigrate to America. Despite the fact that these two men considered themselves devout Christians, their cultural upbringing and residual understanding of spirits still bore a great deal of influence on them.

Futility and Fatalism:

Futility and Fatalism To a Voodoo believer, nothing happens by chance, accident or coincidence. Everything happens for a purpose determined by one of the thousands of spirits composing the Voodoo faith. There is little place for Western ideas of free will and personal responsibility. Sweeping the dirt… Not sweeping the dirt… I could tell who was a Christian or who was not by that.

Biblical Response:

Biblical Response The principle of hope is a necessary strategy of mission . Titus 3:7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Romans 12:12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer . Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Jesus identifies His very being as connected to HOPE.

Stories:

Stories I remember when I lived in a small village near Limbe , Haiti that I was able to tell who was a Christian and who was not, merely by observing the state of their homes. Those who had a hope for a better future (the Christians) were sweeping the dirt in their front yards, whereas those who were caught up in Voodoo had homes in disrepair as they saw no need to make any improvements. In the minds of the Voodoo believers, the spirits wanted them in the state they were in.

Community - no “solitaries” :

Community - no “solitaries” … What is right in the Vodoo world is not a function of abstract reasoning, but is relative to what will achieve unity in the community. …Ignoring family responsibilities, jeopardizing communal interests, and neglecting the Iwa are serious moral offenses which trigger the disapproval of the group and may endanger the care and protection of the spirits. (Michel, 2012)

Biblical Response:

Biblical Response Community is best found with God. I want God in the mud and dust and blood and sweat. …Church is people and what we call The Church is supposed to facilitate the life of the people. For me, the center of everything is the reality that exists between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Jesus is the coming of God to reach us in the deepest places. William Young (author of The Shack and Cross Roads) And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. Acts 2:42 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples. John 13:34-35

Personal Story:

Personal Story After the earthquake it was the pastors who knew the people and what their conditions were- and were able to facilitate the most help.

Coolness:

Coolness Potential candidate for President was Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean. The eventually elected president, Martelly , was a former musician/entertainer. Cool was once an attitude fostered by rebels and underdogs- slaves, prisoners, political dissidents- for whom open rebellion invited punishment, so it hid its defiance behind a wall or ironic detachment, distancing itself from the source of authority rather than directly confronting it ( Pountain , 2000, p.23).

Biblical Value:

Biblical Value 1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." Stories: “Cool-seeking” youth will dress in expensive-looking clothing that they see on American rappers. Even though it is 100 degrees, various young men will wear silk shirts and pin-striped suits or other weather-inappropriate clothing.

Corruption and Survival:

Corruption and Survival 1 Thessalonians 5:15 See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people. Mathew 7: 24-28 But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand…And great was its fall. 1 Samuel 2:11,12 Eli and his sons who were depicted as extremely corrupt and displeasing to the Lord
