SAMSON – The Man who broke his Consecration:

SAMSON – The Man who broke his Consecration Dr. Oyewole O. Sarumi

Introduction :

We are about to unveil the secrets of the downfall of many a great servant of God: Why they didn’t last in anointing? What makes a mighty anointing to evaporate? Why does the sun of several people set mid-day? Why is the so called anointing of our age more of noise, more of words, more of posters, handbills than living epistles? What are the perils, fiery trials and traps being arranged and programmed to cut short the life and ministry of God’s servants? Introduction

Some Questions?:

Some Questions? Oh people of God, you need to answer these questions: Have you started to experience a move of God in your life? Has the Spirit of God began to move you at times here and there? Are you beginning to see some exploits done through your hand as you preach, teach or sing?

If your answers is yes, then you need to SIT down and put on your helmet and breast pieces before you become a casualty of the enemy’s arrow. Why? Some of your friends/colleagues are already gone ] Some are finished } Ignorance is Some are fatally wounded ] not allowed!!

NOTE These::

NOTE These: Every Anointing is preceded by a consecration of the vessel. Consecration is the platform, basis and foundation upon which anointing is built. Decaying Consecration leads to crack and leak away anointing. Compromise, Careless omission, attitude of “it doesn’t matter” etc. are the means devil uses to destroy the consecration of vessels that bears anointing. When anointing collapses and begins to leak out, it may glow intermittently, but no more steady and regular!

Samson - The beginning of his beginning :

Samson - The beginning of his beginning Judges 13: 3-5, 7 3 And the Angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her, "Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. 4 Now therefore, please be careful not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean. 5 For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines." 7 And He said to me, 'Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Now drink no wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.'" [NKJV]

Samson – A man anointed from the womb Bore the anointing that was to break the yoke of the giants: sons of Anak of the order of Goliath of Gath… The basis of this anointing was the Nazarite consecration, and the Lord has spelt this out clearly in the verses above.

The Lord passionately implore his parents to protect his consecration and they kept doing this secretly until he grown to be a man. Judges 13:24-25 says: 24 So the woman bore a son and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. 25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to move upon him at Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol . [NKJV].

They must have regulated his lifestyle as his grows: what he eats, friends he played with etc. It could have been an embarrassment to be unkempt and unshaven from birth to maintain his consecration. But every anointing has a corresponding consecration, so once you keep within the consecration, you experience an abiding anointing.

Each stage of growth in consecration and personal sanctification brings a man into another stage and level of anointing. Samson began to experience the supernatural move of God in his life within the camp as he grew in consecration. Friends must have questioned his carefulness in protecting his consecration, but he was focussed on maintaining it. He may have been called ‘holier that thou’ person, and those who should know even speak against him, but he was focus to stand with God in his consecration.

He was a man of prayer as the bible pointed out that the Spirit of God cam down mightily upon him. He must have walked on and on with the Lord until the enemy tricked him and nailed him down. He had 20 years of continuous exploits for God until he suddenly collapsed. Today we see people celebrating one, two, five years anniversary of their ministry, churches with funfare. NOTE: The enemy has not given up on you yet, he has time to wait. Samson twenty successful ministry collapsed!

Why his 20 years Ministry Collapsed?:

Why his 20 years Ministry Collapsed? The enemy is watching every step you take in ministry. He is focus on getting you down. He is patiently waiting! Let’s read Judge 14:1-3 which says: “Now Samson went down to Timnah , and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 So he went up and told his father and mother, saying, "I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, get her for me as a wife." 3 Then his father and mother said to him, "Is there no woman among the daughters of your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?“ And Samson said to his father, "Get her for me, for she pleases me well." 4 But his father and mother did not know that it was of the LORD — that He was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines. For at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.” NKJV

The path that led to Samson’s fall wasn’t a straight one. It was uneven, unpredictable, winding pathway that we can see only by divine wisdom. It was a path of several SLIPS – Slips of feet, slips of eyes, slips of thoughts, slips of tongues etc. It was also path of several STEPS – steps that look spirituals, highly anointed but were still wrong steps, steps in the wrong direction. The path of consecration is a narrow one – a slip or a mis -step can cause a slip out or a mis -step out of the narrow way of consecration.

First Slip – An Eye for Women…:

First Slip – An Eye for Women… “….and saw a woman… I have seen a woman….” Judge 14:1, 2 “….and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.” Judge 16:1 ….that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek ….” Judge 16:4 It would appear that Samson only see women wherever he goes – Timnath , beyond Gaza, valley of Sorek . What will one day kill a man is never a stranger to him. Delilah didn’t kill Samson, it was his eyes and what he loves that killed him. He always fall in love until he met the FALL of his life in Sorek .

Second Slip – An hasty decision…:

Second Slip – An hasty decision… Now, we see his slip of haste, “…get her for me to wife…” No investigation, no courtship, no development of relationship etc. There’s a mad rush to get things today – rush for programmes, rush for marriage, rush to start own ministry, rush to make money etc. All of these is a sign of a wrong spirit. See Isa 52: 12 says shall not go out with haste…” He threw out his parents’ counsel and insisted on his own self-will. Self-will has destroyed many ministers!

Third Slip – A desire for Self-pleasure:

Third Slip – A desire for Self-pleasure “….for she pleaseth me well…” When you can’t say NO to ‘flesh’ in order to obey God, what happened to Samson will surely come your way. He disowned his covenant to live only to serve and please God. He broke his consecration and promise not to be unequally yoked. He became impervious to spiritual things Surely “…she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth .” ITim.5:6

Fourth Slip – A despise of Godly Counsel…:

Fourth Slip – A despise of Godly Counsel… He despised the godly counsel of his father and mother He became unequally yoked with the uncircumcised. Those that devil will catch, he helps them veer away form those who can counsel them. He eat honey from dead carcass of lion he killed with his bare hands, and gave his parents to eat.

Many of those who break personal consecration have hid it away from the prying eyes of those who have oversight over them. That’s the trick of the enemy to slaughter such men! Are you hiding your life, your activity and your deviations from those whom God has placed over you? Are you dodging godly instructions and counsel? are you now moving only with colleagues, mates and those who cannot call you to order? Are you running away from the disciplines of the elders? do you close their mouth with “honey” from you backsliding so that they do not speak against your waywardness?

The Paradox of Miracle/Results in those not living a Consecrated Life:

This is called “Anointing despite backsliding”, “Miracle and result in spite on unholy living”. This is the paradox! It seems as if Samson still receives divine support even while on the wrong track. This has confused many men of God into the false courage and boldness of persisting in secret sin and disobedience. Many are of the opinion that the manifestation of a spiritual gift is a divine authentication of their nuances and behaviour. NO and NO! The Paradox of Miracle/Results in those not living a Consecrated Life

NOTE: God gift is gift, and are not worked for, and imparted into someone by the mercies of God. Often, gifts manifest through God’s benevolence and mercy and not because of the holiness of the vessel. It happened to the church in Corinth – I Cor.3:1-7 THE FACT: The working of the Spirit may not give the right picture of your inner man.

The Picturesque: :

The Picturesque: The conflicting thing about Samson’s slips was the seeming divine support he had while in mis -steps: Samson still killed a lion: Samson got honey from a dead carcass: Samson makes riddles and jokes with the strings of his consecration: Samson carried away gates…. He rose from fornication and did exploits. Stage anointing – crops up when some of you face crowd and congregation. These things made Samson to advance in his carelessness.

Ministers of God, you need to be sensitive: Watch first and foremost your own life as a servant of God. The pulpit is not the place to watch but it is your personal altar. The audience response is not a yardstick for measuring your stand with God. He used his anointing to build himself a name. All he did was for personal interest and personal battles. Every anointing granted a minister is to glorify God and establish the LORD’s kingdom in the hearts of men.

Results attained in Jesus’ name are not the parameters for measuring a man’s personal consecration. Jesus name is credit worthy and it will ever be! Even ‘dogs’ know if they call it, it would work for them, but it is not a guarantee for your own standing with God! Remember Heb.12:14 says: “…for without holiness, no man shall see the Lord”

CAUTION: When you fall into sin and at the same time find promotion in your life or ministry and things seem to go smoothly and sweetly, it is time to look more critically and cry to God for mercy. Could it be that you are finished? Could it be that the enemy is tricking you, luring you into the abyss? It is time to cry out for help!

But he rose again…:

But he rose again… He repented and renewed his covenant with God. He fasted again. He sat in that prison house. He saw no woman again His eyes were now for heaven. He did not want to live again His desire is to die doing exploits for his God He prayed and prayed again. Jud.16:28 He had to start all over. His air started growing.

God forgave him and used him again – Jud.16: 29-30 Samson’s labour of 20years was less than what God did in one day when he made himself right with God. Several years of ministry as a compromiser may look glamourous, but it’s impact is less that one day of service given to God in righteousness and holiness! Let stop running around and GET God to go with you, and see great exploits following you!

Why would you continue in your backsliding until your eyes are gorged out? You may need to withdraw from ministry and go the your own “appointed prison house” until your hair grows again! A renew consecration will make your hair GROW again! Samson life’s account were penned for our instructions: Rom13:14 says, “…put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to fulfill the lust thereof.”

The Provisions that FLESH can hijack!:

The Provisions that FLESH can hijack! Make no: Time provision – proper time usage needful. Time of wandering, loneliness, depression, lazing around – all are injury time for the flesh Space or Place provision – lonely, screen, seducing, dark, tight, wrong – that’s where flesh hide Ship – provision – Fellow, court, intern, mentor, leader, sponsor, relation, partner, friend etc. Thought provision – Pro.14:23, 23:7, Matt.6:25, Job 31:1 Eye provision – Gen.3:6, II Sam.11:2-4, Pro.4:25-26

10 Powerful Lessons from Samson’s Life:

10 Powerful Lessons from Samson’s Life

Samson’s life Synopsis:

Samson’s life Synopsis

Samson’s name means “like the sun”. He was miraculously conceived after an Angel of the LORD appeared to his barren mother. The Messenger gave an instruction to Samson’s mother about how they should raise the child. The instruction is clear: Samson would be consecrated and become a Nazirite from birth. - Num.6.1-12

Lesson 1: We are called to live a holy life:

Lesson 1: We are called to live a holy life As Christians, we have a higher calling than the pursuit of happiness. It is the pursuit of holiness. The meaning of Nazirite means “to be separated”. Nazirite has almost identical meaning with the word “holy” which means  sanctified . Like Samson, we are all called to be separated from this world’s way of life. In a spiritual sense,  we must be all Nazirites , consecrated and separated for God’s purpose. The Nazirite vow is compared to our consecration, signifying our commitment to God. God expects Christians to live a  holy life . This means a life that is wholly dedicated to God’s way of life. We must offer our life as a “living sacrifice,

Lesson 2: God can use bad situations to fulfill His purpose:

Lesson 2: God can use bad situations to fulfill His purpose Samson is known to be one of the strongest men recorded in the Bible, he is not short of weaknesses. His greatest weakness is women and because of this, Samson is always caught in bad situations. God knows the tendency of Samson and He used this to create a situation where the Philistines can be destroyed. God’s purpose for our lives is way greater than our biggest mistakes.

Lesson 3: You are free to choose but you are not free from the consequence of your choice:

Lesson 3: You are free to choose but you are not free from the consequence of your choice God has given us free moral agency. This means that we have the freedom to do whatever we like, whether we obey Him or not. However, we will never be able to choose the outcome of our choices. Every action you make will either bring you farther or closer to God. Samson has seen the flaw in his character and repented of it. As part of his remorse and regret, he asked God to strengthen him once more. God heard his request and surely, Samson died with the Philistines (Judges 16:30). Hebrews 12:5-6

Lesson 4: Choose a mate within your faith:

Lesson 4: Choose a mate within your faith He decided to choose a mate from the land of Timnah , a woman from daughters of Philistines (Judges 14:2). After 20 years, Samson went to Gaza and saw a harlot there and “went in to her”. Choosing a mate is so life-changing that it should not be based on your will, but God’s will. Samson again loved a woman in the Valley of Sorek , and Delilah ruined his life testimony.  II Corinthians 6:14-16 Emotions are unstable, rather choose to follow the will of God.

Lesson 5: Use our strength for God’s work:

Lesson 5: Use our strength for God’s work As strong as Samson was, his strength comes from God. Without God, he is as strong as any ordinary man. We have different strengths given by God. It could be Writing Playing the piano Singing Encouraging one another Helping in setting up the hall Simply greeting people It is our Christian duty to use our strength for the glory of God.

Lesson 6: The true measure of a man is not found in his physical strength or appearance. :

Lesson 6: The true measure of a man is not found in his physical strength or appearance.  Samson seems to be a man in search of his identity.   Even his strength and ability to overpower (both men and women) did not bring any sense of peace to Samson’s life. Our worth is found in Christ and what He’s already said about us and what He’s already done for us.

Lesson 7: Often your greatest strength can be the source of your greatest weakness.:

Lesson 7: Often your greatest strength can be the source of your greatest weakness. It is possible to squander the very gifts God has given you to live out his purposes for your life.  Failure to give those gifts fully over to God will carry a high price tag.  Samson’s strength became his demise.  He did not use his God-given strength for God alone.  He used it to leverage his own desires.

Lesson 8: Strength in one area of your life does not make up for weakness in another.:

Lesson 8: Strength in one area of your life does not make up for weakness in another. You can be “successful” in worldly ways and not in godly ways.  In what areas of your life are you strong (and does it really matter that you are strong in those areas?)  You can be “successful” in certain areas of your life and still fail where it matters most. Many of us has failed at home, but a success in ministry. Take Heed!!

Lesson 9:  Acknowledging your bent toward certain sin is the beginning of your battle to overcome it. :

Lesson 9:  Acknowledging your bent toward certain sin is the beginning of your battle to overcome it.  Admit where most apt to fall. Name it; say it out loud and tell others.  Sin unconfessed is sin revisited.  Sin revisited is sin that is self-destructive.

There are always consequences for disobedience. :

There are always consequences for disobedience.  Samson’s story goes from sad to tragic when Samson does not learn from his mistakes.  He repeats the same bad mistake of entering into a relationship with another bad woman.  You must guard your heart! “ Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” Galatians 6:7

Lesson 10: God can restore your life for His purposes even after you fall. :

Lesson 10: God can restore your life for His purposes even after you fall.  Though you may face the consequences of your sin for the rest of your life, God can restore you.  Some people will never forget, God forgives.  You may not enter back into a particular place or position, but God will still accomplished His purposes through your life.   An undying faith in God trumps even our failures.
