 People of old in the Bible days were committed people.  They affected generations yet unborn for zeal in them caught fire in others.  We thirst and desire these days to come in our time. Introduction: Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 10:

 This meeting is expected to stimulate in us the consciousness of what God is demanding from Gospel workers cum church leaders:  Commitment to Christ  Commitment by caring and  Commitment by conviction – in the ministry we have received of the Lord. Col.4:17.  Studying the life of the patriarchs revealed the tenacity with which they pursue the issue of commitment. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 11:

 The word ‘Commit’ means:  To ‘give in charge or trust’  To consign’  To involve oneself’.  The word ‘Commitment’ means:  The act of committing  An order for sending to prison  An obligation to be undertaken  A declared attachment to a doctrine believe or cause’. Understanding the Meaning of Commitment Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 12:

 Another word for ‘being committed’ to a cause or in prison is ‘ALONE’.  If you’re deeply and strongly committed to a cause people won’t understand you you’ll be ALONE but not LONELY.  It’s human to be with the crowd while divine to stand alone. Man likes to follow people but God-like people follow principles. COMMITMENTBEING ALONE Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 13:

 Are you committed to the truth Since the days of Garden of Eden truth has been jettisoned and out of fashion.  Noah built the ark and ventured to voyage alone Gen.6-8.  Abraham alone called to wander and worship God. Gen.12:1-10.  Daniel stood ate and prayed alone – Dan.1:6.  Jeremiah prophesied and wept over Israel alone.  Elijah confronted King Ahab and witnessed alone on Mount Carmel.  Jesus Christ lived and died alone on the cross of Calvary.  Why is it so in all these Characters Matt.7:14. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 14:

 All of these were committed to:  Fellowship  Praying  Giving  Faith  Loving  Building relationship  Word of God and  Service/work especially evangelism. In other words Commitment is following Jesus. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 15:

The Chiefs of COMMITMENT  The Bible teaches that the chief commitment of our lives is to God Himself.  Jesus said “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment” Matthew 22:37-38.  In other words Commitment is following Jesus alone. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 16:

Nothing Must Hinder Your Commitment to Christ  Jesus tells us that our commitment to Him must supersede our commitment to even our families:  “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters yes and even his own life he cannot be My disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after Me cannot be my disciple” Luke 14:26-27. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 17:

Implications of Such Commitment  Such commitment means our family relationships may be severed.  It means our commitment to Christ demands if given an “either/or” situation we turn away from them and continue on with Jesus Luke 12:51-53.  The bottom line is that those who cannot make that kind of commitment cannot be His disciple. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 18:

Why We Should Exhibit Such Level of Commitment  The reason for such commitment and loyalty is that the trials we may have to endure will be quite demanding our allegiance to Him at times may be arduous John 15:18.  Jesus and the Apostles emphasise this much in the Gospels: Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 19:

 Jesus alerted His disciples: “Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me they will also persecute you” John 15:20.  The apostle Paul echoed His warning: “Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” 2 Timothy 3:12. See Also Gal.2:20. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 20:

THE 3 ELEMENTS OF COMMITMENT.

slide 21:

 Jesus wasted no time focusing on the heart of commitment: It is either the disciples would be committed to Him and deny their own desires or they would be determined to go their own ways and deny Him.  The choice to commit is the same for all believers - either we deny ourselves or deny Him either goes His way or we pursue our way. Lk.9:23 1. COMMITMENT DEMANDS A CHOICE Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 22:

 Commitment cannot be divorced from responsibility.  It extends beyond our relationship to the heavenly Father to other areas of our life.  Ruths words of commitment to Naomi did not speak as loudly as did her actions. She left her family and homeland to return with Naomi to Bethlehem of Judea. 2. Commitment Demands Action Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 23:

 Commitment is exclusive.  In a commitment to marriage Gods plan is for one woman and one man to commit to each other exclusively and permanently.  Commitment builds up faith and develops character. It is a spiritual discipline requiring time work and determination.  Are ready to get committed in this work 3. Commitment limits choices Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 24:

 When there’s no commitment there is hesitation and a drawback.  Once we are committed to a cause or pursuit a whole steam of events erupts and situation unimagined begins to flow and follow.  Our greatest days should be when something snapped in us to cause us to a high level of commitment to a pursuit.  It may be days of struggle suffering or battles for life. An Opening Illustration on Commitment:  “There is a story told about a pig and a chicken walking down the road together. As they walked along they read a sign advertising a breakfast to benefit the poor. The chicken said to the pig “You and I should donate a ham and egg breakfast.” The pig replied “Not so fast for you it would just be a contribution but for me it would be a total commitment. Total Commitment or Mere Involvement What Does Commitment mean  Noah Webster defines Commit like this: “To give in trust to put into the hands or power of another to entrust with to.  Does this sound like you with Jesus Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 33:

What does the bible say about commitment  1 Kings 8:61 - Your hearts must be fully committed to the LORD our God to live by His decrees and obey His Commands.  Doesn’t look like an option to me Must commit to avoid growing weary.  Galatians 6:9 - Let us not become weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  In order to not give up we must be committed. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 34:

The God Who Commits  Douglas Rumford makes a profound statement in his book Soul Shaping. He writes “We make our commitments then our commitments make us. Once they are chosen many other choices follow as a matter of course.” Once we commit to follow Jesus many other decisions in life must fall into line or we overturn our prior commitment. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 35:

Being Committed to God  Quality relationships are founded on the rock of commitment not the shifting sand of feelings or emotions.  God calls us to be people of commitment first to him and then to others. As a great leader of Israel Joshua’s entire life was marked by commitment. We even hear this in his final words in Jos. 24:14-27. NOTE: Joshua told the people that even if they chose not to serve the Lord they would still not be exempt from service. If we do not serve the Creator we will unavoidably serve some part of the creation. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 36:

Committing vs. Bargaining  Prophet Habakkuk models an essential truth about God-focused commitment: “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls yet I will rejoice in the Lord I will be joyful in God my Saviour.”- Habakkuk 3:17-18 NOTE: The key ingredient to Habakkuk’s statement is that it is unidirectional he promised to maintain his attitude regardless of the payback. That’s really what “commitment” is. That’s what God expect from all serve in His vineyard. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 37:

Commitment is of the Heart  Jesus says in Matthew 5:31-32: “It was also said “Whoever divorces his wife let him give her a certificate of divorce.” But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife except on the ground of sexual immorality makes her commit adultery and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” ESV. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 38:

 God hates non-commitment to one another but also non- commitment to Him. In the Garden of Eden God told Adam that he must not eat the fruit of one particular tree.  The whole narrative centres on Adam’s disobedience. Without commitment obedience isn’t possible.  “Obedience” is another word that has no more meaning if you take commitment out of it. Obedience without commitment is no longer a heart obedience. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 39:

Commitment in Speech  An example of this is Matthew 5:33-37: Again you have heard that it was said to those of old “You shall not swear falsely but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.” But I say to you Do not take an oath at all either by heaven for it is the throne of God or by the earth for it is his footstool or by Jerusalem for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply “Yes” or “No” anything more than this comes from evil. ESV Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 40:

 If I say yes I commit myself to doing what I said I will do. If I say no I commit myself to refraining from doing what I said I won’t do. One way or the other there is commitment.  Your character has to manifest commitment in your speech whether “yes” or “no.” Nothing more need be said. No vow is needed. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 41:

Love is a Commitment  Jesus says in Matthew 5:43-48: “You have heard that it was said “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” But I say to you Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you what reward do you have Do not even the tax collectors do the same And if you greet only your brothers what more are you doing than others Do not even the Gentiles do the same You therefore must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. ESV. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 42:

 Jesus begins by saying “You shall love your neighbour”. The meaning of love is simple. Commitment and nothing more  A definition of love that doesn’t include commitment is no love because the essence of love is commitment.  Many people think of love as an emotion or feeling but the biblical meaning of love is a “love rooted in commitment rather than feeling”. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 43:

1. No Commitment no Love  We love the neighbour or love one another but not for the reason that our neighbour is lovely. This removes emotional feelings as the basis of love.  We love the neighbour or love one another not because you are lovely or I am lovely but because God is lovely and has commanded us to love. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 44:

2. Commitment to Love is Obedience to God  The motive of love shouldn’t be the mere liking of the other person.  In the Lord’s teaching the reason we love and commit is not that the other person is lovely but that God has commanded us to love.  The commitment to love is therefore an act of obedience. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 45:

3. Commitment comes from the Heart and requires God’s Power  True commitment comes from the heart it is not an external performance for people to see.  Commitment comes from a transformed nature by the Holy Spirit.  Not by your strength but drawing strength from God’s Power. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 48:

Commitment: God’s very Nature  In 1 John 4 verses 8 and 16 we read: “The one who does not love does not know God because God is love ....And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love and the one who remains in love remains in God and God remains in him. HCSB. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 49:

 God is love. To be united with God and to fellowship with Him you must walk in love.  The very content of love is commitment which means that commitment is in the very character of God who is love. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 50:

God’s Commitment to Us  1 John 4:19: “We love because He first loved us.”  Equally true is that we commit to God only because God first committed to us. Our commitment to God is built on His commitment to us.  Towards the end of Matthew 5 the Sermon on the Mount shifts its focus from our commitment to God to God’s commitment to us. Jesus says in Matthew 5:45: “... that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” NIV. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 51:

The Results Of Commitment  There is reward if we don’t give up: 2 Chronicles 15:7 - Be strong and do not give up for your work will be rewarded. God makes the committed right and just:  Psalm 37:5-6 - Commit your way to the LORD trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.  Makes their plans and desires to succeed: Proverbs 16:3 - Commit to the LORD whatever you do and your plans will succeed. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 52:

The Committed Endures Perseveres  The committed endure s and perseveres. Do you What does it mean to endure persevere  To endure is:  1 To remain: i.e. to tarry behind  2 To remain i.e. abide not recede or flee.  2a to persevere: under misfortunes and trials to hold fast to one’s faith in Christ  2b to endure bear bravely and calmly: ill treatments. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 53:

How Often Do We Need To Persevere  1 Corinthians 13:6-7 - Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects always trusts always hopes always perseveres.  Without endurance perseverance one cannot commit.  Are you struggling with Commitments In which area of your life do you need to ask God for help to be committed Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 54:

COMMITMENT TO THE PURSUIT OF GOD MODULE 2 Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 55:

Opening Text: Matthew 13:44-46  "Again the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field which a man found and hid and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.  "Again the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls 46 who when he had found one pearl of great price went and sold all that he had and bought it. NKJV Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 56:

Introduction  Many pulpits today exude much head knowledge about God and activities devoid of manifest presence of God.  We cannot deliver God that we have not gotten ourselves.  The pursuit of God is a task in fact it is the task of being a believer. The primary result of your coming to him by faith is firstly to diligently seek Him – Heb.11:6… Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 57:

 Pursuit is a chase tracking down and a quest for something. Such expedition takes nothing less than a commitment.  It was AW Tozer that asserted “that the impulse to pursue God originates with God for ‘no man can come to me said our Lord except the Father which hath sent me draw him’ but the outworking of that impulse is our following hard after Him. Thus a genuine thirst after God is a major sign of true regeneration as genuine child longs to know his father Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 58:

The Priority of Knowing God  Jer.9: 23 Thus says the LORD: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom Let not the mighty man glory in his might Nor let the rich man glory in his riches 24 But let him who glories glory in this That he understands and knows Me That I am the LORD exercising loving-kindness judgment and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight" says the LORD. NKJV Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 59:

 Phil 3:8 – “Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish that I may gain Christ NKJV  Man’s legitimate natural pursuit in life centres around: WISDOM MIGHT and RICHES. See Matt.6:33. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 60:

Commitment to Overcome Substitute and Distraction  Read Exodus 32:21-25  God left a vacuum in every human soul for Himself When it remains empty a substitute is always handy. Aaron couldn’t deliver God like Moses to the Israelites he found a substitute in the golden calf.   Exo.32:23….“For they said to me Make us gods that shall go before us as for this Moses the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt we do not know what has become of him.” NKJV Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 61:

Substitutes and distractions to the pursuit of God as:  The voice of the People  The voice of the Flesh  Activities around God which is not God and not pointing to God. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 62:

Commitment to Pursue God  Psalm 42:2 – “My inner self thirsts for God for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God” John 7:37 1 Thes.1:910 AMP  Ps 63:8 – “My whole being follows hard after You and clings closely to You Your right hand upholds me.” AMP  Hosea 6:1-3 - "Come let us return to the LORD He has torn us in pieces now he will heal us. He has injured us now he will bandage our wounds. 2 In just a short time he will restore us so we can live in his presence. 3 Oh that we might know the LORD Let us press on to know him Then he will respond to us as surely as the arrival of dawn or the coming of rains in early spring.“ NLT Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 63:

 Knowing God is an active pursuit: We must schedule time in personal devotions and retreats.  Consistent and conscientious growth: We must track His dealings in our lives and yield as He works on us. Knowing Him is cumulative and it takes a consistent cumulative experience with Him. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 64:

 To press is to overcome the resistance: There’s an element of effort so labour to overcome resistance to knowing God. The present world system is ‘anti- seeking God’ Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 65:

The Reward of Getting God  Reading from Job 22:21-28 we have the following rewards:  We partake of His nature – vs.23  All that are His is available to us – wisdom might and riches – vs.24-25  Answered prayers – vs.27  We rule with Him in authority – vs.28 Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 66:

Conclusion  Dear gospel workers and beloved of the Lord God is again instructing us that … ‘thou art careful and troubled about many things: But ONE THING IS NEEDFUL: and ……..has chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her.’Luke 10:41- 42.  What are those THINGS you need to DROP and set ASIDE for you to be COMMITTED Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 67:

TRAITS OF COMMITMENT IN A GOSPEL LABOURER MODULE 3 Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 68:

Opening Text: I Peter 4:17-19  “For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God and if it begins with us first what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God 18 Now "If the righteous one is scarcely saved Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear" 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good as to a faithful Creator. NKJV Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 69:

Introduction  Commitment is a scare commodity in todays’ church.  However in spite of this scarcity there are remnants who have decided that no matter what happen they will stay put at the gate rather than go in to their ‘wife’.  That’s the spirit of Uriah when David brought him home to cover his sin. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 70:

 We are all “work in progress” you may not have all but they ought to be evident in good measure in the life of anyone being considered for ministry or already in ministry. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 71:

 Character is developed and proven in the everyday situations of life church and ministry so it is essential that church leaders build relationships that enable first-hand observation and input. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 72:

 Such relationships are a key aspect of a church leader’s role and responsibility in helping all gospel labourers do what the Lord has called them to do in His vineyard. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 73:

Trait 1: Godliness  “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them because if you do you will save both yourself and your hearers” 1 Timothy 4v16.  Life comes before doctrine. God puts life before doctrine. What matters to the Lord of the Church is clear: Who we are matters more than what we’ve done or what we know Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 74:

 Is there evidence in the life of the individual of a growing submission to Christ and of a growing spiritual maturity 1 Timothy 3v6 1 Peter 5v2.  The Gospel ministry requires moral authority and a gospel worker must be known for their integrity and emotional stability. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 75:

Trait 2: Teach…ability  Workers do you have they a “teachable spirit” Philippians 3v13-14. We never stop learning in the Christian life and we are never too old to be taught  Are you clearly under the oversight of a local church  How do you respond to constructive criticism  Do you have people in your life who are calling you to account speaking the truth in love and being a true friend in Christ  Are you self-aware  Can you identify own strengths and weaknesses  Do you realise that your own heart is their greatest challenge in ministry Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 76:

Trait 3: Faithfulness  Faithfulness is one of the great hallmarks of a maturing Christian.  Are you dependable  Are you consistent in both their relationships and your service  Have you been proven in discipline and endurance E.g. bad time keeping a lack of organisation failure to return calls etc. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 77:

Trait 4: Servant-heartedness  The Christian model of leadership is radically different from that which the world promotes.  In God’s new humanity the greatest is the least the most heroic is the one who is servant of all.  Does the person look out for others and their needs  Do they readily see what needs to be done and get on and do it Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 78:

Trait 5: Humility  Paul counselled that ministry flows out of weakness: “The Lord said to me my grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12v9.  Do you know anything of the battle of having their pride subdued 1 Peter 5v5: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”  Do you have a natural humility that has been shaped by experiencing brokenness and weakness in their life Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 79:

Trait 6: Love for People  Christopher Ash Director of the Cornhill Training Course in London once made a passing comment that is impressive. Talking of the ‘call’ to ministry he said: “Increasingly the first question that I want to ask of anyone who says they are called to ministry is this: Do you love people”  You need compassion and affection for people and an accompanying good level of emotional intelligence before you can serve well Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

Trait 7: Proven-ness  The Bible tells us to appoint to leadership those:  Who have a “good reputation with outsiders” 1 Timothy 3v8  Who have demonstrated an ability to manage their family 1 Timothy 3v5  Have a ‘proven-ness’ about themselves.  There is more to ministry than a good theological education Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

Conclusion:  The lack of basic experience in handling and leading people will come back to bite and harm such workers in the everyday life of gospel ministry.  Therefore we need to take the long term view when preparing people for ministry.  Life and workplace experience is not time wasted but a vital part of the preparation for a lifetime of ministry. Opening Texts:  Gen 1:26 Then God said "Let Us make man in Our image according to Our likeness let them have dominion over the fish of the sea over the birds of the air and over the cattle over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.“  Col 2: 9-10- For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily 10 and you are complete in Him who is the head of all principality and power.  Rom 8:28-29 - 29 For whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.  Rom 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a living sacrifice holy acceptable to God which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.  Service to God is not the primary purpose of our salvation it’s commitment to be conformed to the image of Christ.  Our Father in heaven and the Holy Spirit in our hearts are both working towards one goal - that we might become like Jesus.  The more we become like our Lord in character the more we will live on earth as He lived. Conclusion  Both Jesus and Adam heard the voice of God - the difference was only in the fact that one obeyed and the other disobeyed.  So too Jesus said it would be with those who hear His voice - one would obey and build on the rock unshakable for eternity while another would hear but not obey and thus build on the sand ultimately to perish Matthew 7:24-27. slide 90:

Introduction  A lots of church work force depend on their aptitudes rather than their attitudes for high performance in ministry. This is a great mistake which many ministers/workers are yet to recover from.  The primary reason for this wrong notion is gross ignorance of the importance of attitude to high performance. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 91:

FACTS ON ATTITUDE FROM THESE SCRIPTURAL PASSAGES Taken from II Peter 1:5-11 and Philippians 2:5-10  There are virtues attitudes that every Christian must add to his/her faith for maximum productivity Verse 5.  What to add to faith for maximum productivity are not aptitude but attitude Verse 5-7.  Godly attitudes are the foundation for fruitfulness in ministry verse 8.  Attitude is the antidote to spiritual barrenness verse 8.  Lack of godly attitude is equated to disability blindness verse 9. ATTITUDES RESPONSIBLE FOR LOW PERFORMANCE IN MINISTRY  Negative Thinking: Show me a man of negative thought and I will tell you the man that will fail flatly and woefully. When God wants to move a man from failure zone to success zone the first thing He moves is his thought. You can because you think you can. You cannot because you think you cannot. As a man thinks so he is. Everyone will eventually become his thought. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 98:

Being a Pessimist:  A sadist is someone who always looks at the negative side of life. Two people were sent to go and sell shoes to a people group that have never worn shoes all their lives. The first was a pessimist he came back with a report that there is no need taking shoe to them because no one in that country wears shoes. The second an optimist came back with a report that he just found an opportunity to sell all their shoes. What a different report. It is a subject of attitude. slide 99:

Hopelessness:  Living a life without a hope makes one to go for the rope commit suicide. Almost everyone who has committed suicide had first of all lost hope. Being hopeless seeing nothing good in the future is a negative attitude. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

slide 100:

Giving of Excuses:  It is the spirit and mentality of failure that makes one to give excuses for everything. John Mason says “Excuses are nails to build the house of failure” Dr. Francis Bola Akin-John says “those who make excuses here shall be excused thereafter”. And Dr. Maxey Garry the founding father of West African Theological Seminary said “Blaming your fault on your nature does not change the nature of your fault”. Luke 14:16-21. Complaining and Murmuring:  This is when someone always murmurs and complains about everything. This is one attitude God was always condemning in the life of the people of Israel on their journey to Canaan land. The Lord rebuked me for this attitude many years ago. He told me emphatically “Stop complaining. Complainers can never be commanders and commanders dont complain”. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

ATTITUDE FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE IN MINISTRY  1 Peter 1:5-10  Everyone that wants to succeed in life must be responsible for his or her attitude. You must stop blaming people. Get out of the blaming business and hold yourself responsible. 10 of life is made up of what happens to you while 90 of life is decided by how you react or respond. slide 109:

Be a ‘Possibiliterian’:  Possess the spirit of ‘I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me’. For every step you take towards success challenges are bound to arise but dont give up. Possess the attitude of ‘I can’. I read a literature book in my Secondary School that described the attitude of the olden days’ train the one that used charcoal when it is climbing the mountain. The noise changes from time to time. The author interpreted the changing in its noise as when the train is faced with a high mountain. “It changes its voice to I think I can. I think I can. It further says I think I can get to the top. When it gets to the top it says I can I can I can”. The Bible says “with God all things are possible” Mark 10:27. Pursue Excellence:  Go for the best. Dont settle for average work at improving yourself – both your in-look and your outlook. Refuse to be among the rest choose to be among the best. Dont settle for second best. Believe that you can be the best God wants for you. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

Focus in your purpose:  Your purpose is the primary reason for your existence. Beware of failure activities that hinder one from focusing on his or her purpose. Beware of time wasting activities such as too much watching of television gossip luck that makes many to engage in lottery of various styles and forms. Some of these things are wearing the overall of religion.  To be successful you have to keep your focus. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146

Surround yourself with success-minded people:  Check the value and value systems that go around you. You will need three categories of success minded people to continually succeed.  Success Minded Senior: They will impact you with knowledge wisdom grace opportunities for success.  Success Minded Equal:- They will keep you warm and challenge you on the way of success.  Success Minded Junior:- They will serve you pray for you and become the extension arm of your success. Be Truthful Honest and follow the Path of Integrity:  Honesty is the best policy. Success is only a product of truthful and honest venture. Lies and deception are always on speed but they never arrive at the final destination of success. Truth honesty and integrity may be slow but steadily they get to the final destination of success. Discipline your mouth:  Your mouth can become your instrument of success or instrument of failure. Watch your tongue and tame it. Dont just speak think before you speak. When there is nothing good in the mind to express the mouth should keep shut. Beware of gossip lying tale bearing etc. they are fruits of untamed tongue. Confess positively with your mouth. Develop a Forgiving Heart:  Success cannot be achieved alone because it is not found in the College of Lone Rangers. You will always have people along the path of your success. Some of these people will sometimes step on your toes what will make you to go along with them is the ability to forgive. “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attitude of the strong” says Mahatma Gandhi. A winner rebukes and forgives a loser is too timid to rebuke and too pretty to forgive. Optimize Time:  Manage time well. It is a divine resource given to all without discrimination. How you use time will determine the dividends it will yield to you. Chronologically we have 24 hours in a day but individually it is the only hours that are well used for Gods purpose that is yours. The time we have depends on the time we use. We can either get a day as value out of a month or a month as value out of a day. Be punctual at programmes the office and duty. Beware of procrastination. Maximize your time. A Portuguese Couple Story  I remember a couple in our church in Ireland when they first arrived they could not speak English. They realised very quickly that for them to succeed in Ireland they must find a way to learn understand and communicate well in English. The wife enrolled in an English class and took Cambridge exams and out of twelve people in her class only two passed and she was one of the two. Today she works in sales in a busy company. They told me they took it upon themselves not to speak their native tongue at home Portuguese but speak only English there. The husband works in an English- speaking computer firm and he concluded his degree in the Dublin Business School and went on to obtain a Masters in one of Ireland’s foremost universities.  This couple yes they are Christians and are children of the Most High and have all the promises in the Bible but they had to develop themselves in order to actualise those promises in their lives and un-lay the wealth of the wicked that had been stored up for them in Christ. Friend it’s time to rise up and act. It’s time to stop wishing and complaining. It’s time to take responsibility for your personal development and attainment of your goals. Why Are Many of Us Not Growing  The reasons why many believers are not growing include:  Lack of purpose and direction – Pro.29:18. Vision of who you are purpose in life and where you are going is lacking.  Absence of genuine salvation – Many aren’t sure of their salvation. Many are religious but not saved. Many are reformed but not transformed. Many are hoping to please God with their works.  Lack of stock taking and analysis – 2Cor.13:5. Many fail to check up themselves. They assume they are OK. They fail to compare their today with their yesterday spiritually. The best watchman in the world is the man who watch himself. Pastoral Leadership Academy - www.pl-academy.org Tel: 07083063146
