The Seasons of our Christian Journey:

The Seasons of our Christian Journey Dr. Oyewole Sarumi

Scripture A very wise man named Solomon penned the words: “ To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:” Eccl 3:1

Introduction :

Introduction In each of our lives there is a season to our Christian life. This is the reason why Peter said that we should grow in the grace and in the knowledge of Christ. 2 Pet 3:18 As we grow as Christians we are ever changing in our service to the Lord. Let us examine the 4 seasons of a Christian’s life.

1. Springtime Of Our Journey:

1. Springtime Of Our Journey Every Christian remembers the zeal they had when they first became a Christian. They seemingly want to do everything, yet were not prepared to do that much for the Lord, for they were babes in Christ. Peter said, “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow thereby:” 1 Peter 2:2 During this period it is very imperative that we are weaned on the Word of God that in time we might do mighty works for the Lord in our proper season.

To this end Paul wrote, “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Heb 5:12-14.

It is imperative that the most seasoned Christians among us (e.g. Preachers, teachers, elders, deacons etc ) tutor and supply the spiritual needs of the Springtime Christian, that they too may one day flourish in the vineyard of the Lord.

2. Summer Of Our Journey:

2. Summer Of Our Journey If we reach the summer of our Christian life, we are prepared to be teachers, preachers, deacons, and elders of the church. We have put on the whole armor of God, and are prepared to defend ourselves against the trickery of the Devil. Eph 6:12-18 We are set to defend the gospel of Christ against false doctrine. Philip 1:15-18 We are ready to contend for the Faith. Jude 3 We are able to prove all things and hold firm that which is good. 1 Thess 5:21 We are able to win souls, and to convert the sinner from the error of their ways. Prov 11:30 f; Jam 5:19,20

To those who meet the requirements to be a deacon or elder of the church and have the desire to become one, it is a time for leadership and guidance of fellow Christians; 1 Tim 3:1-13. A time to be watch out for the souls of others, and give an account to God for those under his watchful leadership; Heb 13:7,17 A time to protect the church against false teachers, and to feed the church of God with the Word of truth. Acts 20:28-31

3. Autumn Of Our Journey:

3. Autumn Of Our Journey By the time one gets to this stage, they have been a Christian for quite sometime. They have endured much hardships for the cause of Christ, and are very wise in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. It’s a time many preachers pass on their knowledge and advice to a future generation, even as Paul passed on his to a young Timothy. 2 Tim 4:2-5

It’s a time when we examine ourselves whether we be in the faith, unless we ourselves having taught others be castaways. 2 Cor 13:5 f; 1 Cor 9:27 At this stage we have our house in order knowing we shall soon die in the flesh, but continue to live in the spirit. 2 Kings 20:1 It’s a time one prepares to meet their Maker knowing that they have fought a good fight of faith, finished their course, and kept the faith. Therefore they are ready to obtain their crown of life. 2 Tim 4:7,8 .

4. Winter Of Our Journey:

4. Winter Of Our Journey If we reach this stage, we have finished our journey. It’s a time to stand before God and be judged according to our deeds, and receive our crown of life. 2 Cor 5:10 ff ; Rom 2:16; Jn 12:48; Rev 2:10 Blessed are those who die in the Lord that they may have rest from their labors , and their works follow them. Rev 14:13

Precious in God’s sight is the death of his saints. Ps 116:15 It’s a time when those who were left behind are inspired by your life’s accomplishments in the Lord, knowing that all die, but so few who die in the Lord. Heb 9:27 It’s a time for opportunity for someone who is prepared to serve the Lord to fill your shoes in service to God. 2 Tim 2:2

Conclusion: :

Conclusion:   ‘To everything there is a season’, and as our Christian journey unfolds let us be ever mindful of our ultimate goal, and this is to obtain eternal life with God. Tit 1:2 Our journey first begins when we are born again by the Word of God, the gospel of our salvation. 1 Pet 1:23-25 f; Eph 1:13

Our journey is tried and tested as we endure persecutions and tribulations beyond measure. 2 Tim 3:12 ff ; 1 Pet 4:12,16; 1 Pet 2:20,21 Eventually , our journey ends when we are judged by God’s Word according to our works. To this end did we begin our journey, and to this end let us rejoice and shout for joy when all is completed in the Lord. Ps 32:11
