Why – BIG PICTURE THINKING Allows you to lead There are many big-picture thinkers who aren’t leaders, but few leaders who are not big picture thinkers EFFECTIVE LEADERS…MUST See the vision before their people or team does Size up situations – many variables, good & bad Know where the team is going – “goal is not to make their people feel good, but to help them be good & accomplish the dream, goal, job, etc.

The Big Picture Thinker : 

The Big Picture Thinker Determines or shows your team how the future connects with the past – this makes the journey make meaningful! “Carpe Momento” – Seize the moment!

STAY ON TARGET : 

STAY ON TARGET FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS “He that is everywhere is nowhere.” (Thomas Fuller, Chaplain to Charles III, England) Put daily activities in the context of the big picture – will keep you on target! “You’ve got to think about ‘big things’ while you’re doing small things, so all the small things go in the right direction.” (Alvin Toffler)

PERSPECTIVE : 

PERSPECTIVE See what others see! Others’ point of view Get outside yourself! Consider different angles, history, interests & concerns of others Set aside your OWN agenda

TEAMWORK : 

TEAMWORK A good leader will make their “team” see the whole picture; not just their part! Anytime a person doesn’t know how their work fits into the big picture the WHOLE team is in trouble Big picture thinkers– don’t lose sight of the goal or purpose!

Be Extraordinary : 

Be Extraordinary Prepare for the day with a written agenda. Pick out the “main event” – the most important thing – what will make or break the day. Focus on making that “main event” an extra-ordinary event Preparation is the most important thing for a job well done! Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities. Seize common occasions and make them great. Weak men wait for opportunities strong men make them.” (Orison Swett Marden, 1850-1924)

Learn from experiences you don’t have – experiences that others have! Gain insight from a variety of people. Give yourself permission to expand your world

Thinking Question:Am I thinking beyond myself & my world so that I process ideas with a holistic perspective? : 

Thinking Question:Am I thinking beyond myself & my world so that I process ideas with a holistic perspective? Putting Big-Picture Thinking into Action How do you rate yourself as a BPT on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being narrow and 10 being expansive? Did you score lower than 8? If so, give yourself permission to expand your world. Pick a problem/project that you would like to improve through BPT. Then do the following exercise. Opposites: What is the obvious solution for success? What is an alternative solution, something that contradicts to the first idea. How can you make those seemingly contradictory ideas work?
