Electronic mail or email for short is a system for sending messages over computer networks. Email has been made freely available by services such as Gmail and has become one of the world’s most widely used methods of communication. With email, you can send text and image-based messages in electronic form. This can include sending messages to people on the other side of the world in seconds. What is Email?

How Do I Begin?:

To begin using email, you must first register for an email account with an email provider. Your email provider will provide you with an email address, which is a unique address that you will use to send and receive messages. An email address contains a username followed by the @ symbol and then the domain name. The domain name is usually the service provider you have chosen. In this class, Gmail will be your provider. Attaching Files Email also allows for “attaching” of digital files in the form of images, videos, music files, documents, spreadsheets and much more. In fact, anything that can be saved to a file on a computer theoretically can be attached to an email and sent to another email address.

Can be accessed from any computer in the world that has a Web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) Great for people that do not own a computer but are able to access one, such as the Newark Senior Center lab, the library, or a friend or relative’s computer. All free email services tend to add a "tagline" advertisement at the end of outgoing emails but Gmail does not. If you have a Gmail account, you can also use many of Google’s other free services.

What is a CC?:

What is a CC? ( C arbon C opy) The field in an e-mail header that names additional recipients for the message. A verbatim copy of the message is also sent to all the addresses listed in the Cc: field, though. There can be more than one email address in this field, and they all get a copy. To enter more than one address in the Cc: field, separate them with commas.

The Shortcomings of Cc::

The Shortcomings of Cc: When you send a message to more than one address using the Cc: field, both the original recipient and all the recipients of the carbon copies see the To: and Cc: fields including all the addresses in them. This means that every recipient gets to know the email addresses of all the persons that received your message. This is usually not desirable. Nobody likes their email address exposed to the public.

What is a BCC? Short for b lind c arbon c opy, a copy of an e-mail message sent to a recipient without the recipient's address appearing in the message. Most email programs include the bcc function. When you enter addresses in the bcc field, the email addresses of the recipients do not appear in the message. This is useful if you want to copy a message to many people without each of them seeing who the other recipients are.
