“The effects of whirlpool bath and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on complex regional pain syndrome”:

“The effects of whirlpool bath and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on complex regional pain syndrome” Gul Devrimsul , Aysegul Kucukali Turkyilmaz , Murat Yildirim , Munevver Serdaroglu Beyazal 2015 Journal of Physical Therapy Science Purpose of the study: to find out whether or not neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or whirlpool bath are more effective in treating complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

Participants:

Participants 60 participants randomly assigned to a group 30 participants in Group 1 Received 15 treatments of whirlpool bath, underwater ultrasound, and ROM and strengthening exercises 30 participants in Group 2 Received 15 treatments of NMES, underwater ultrasound, and ROM and strengthening exercises

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria:

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria Exclusion Peripheral neuropathy, prior hand fracture, systemic disease, open wound on hand Inclusion Diagnosis of type 1 complex regional pain syndrome in the upper extremity

Outcome Measures:

Outcome Measures Visual Analogue Scale to measure pain Hand volumetric device to measure edema Hand goniometer to measure wrist flexion/extension and finger-to-palm crease Hand dynamometer to measure grip strength Pinch meter to measure pinch strength

Results :

Results Statistically significant results seen in all outcome measure for both treatment groups However, the whirlpool bath group saw higher improvements in edema, ROM, pain, grip strength, and lateral pinch strength

Implications for practice:

Implications for practice Based on the results of this study, I now have an effective treatment plan to use for CRPS patients. Whirlpool bath has been shown to be the most effective treatment, however, if that is not available to use for treatment I now know that neuromuscular electrical stimulation is also effective.
