aor.us Withania Somnifera Or Indian Ginseng Withania somnifera also known as Indian Ginseng or Winter Cherry also known by its Indian name Ashwagandha is used widely in Ayurveda or the Indian system of medicine. The herb is dubbed as Indian Ginseng for its Aphrodisiac properties. The Indian name Ashwagandha means the smell and the power of a horse. It has been used as an Aphrodisiac for centuries but of late it is more renowned as a herb with many other benefits. Studies have revealed that its anti-mitogenic and adaptogenic properties are as good as Panax ginseng. However it has much better action as compared to Ginseng since it is milder and can be given safely to overactive or debilitated patients. The herb is used for treating mental ailments and is also regarded as a very good anxiolytic. It also boosts the defences of the body against diseases and adverse vagaries of weather. Different studies have proved the anxiolytic and antidepressant actions of the bioactive glycowithanolides WSG isolated from WS roots. WSG antidepressant action was comparable to common antidepressant medications like imipramine. The results also reaffirm the use of the herb in treating depression and behavioural disorders in Ayurveda. Modern studies and traditional Indian medicine report numerous beneficial effects of Ashwagandha herb. The herb has excellent antidepression action coupled with neuroprotective effects. The herb is also renowned for its aphrodisiac properties and extends a synergistic action on major organs and physiological processes of the body. Withania somnifera belongs to a member of the herb family which is known as adaptogens. The term adaptogen means the herb has phytonutrients which are critical in regulating and regularising the physiology of the body under stressful conditions. These adaptogens help to normalise functions which have turned haywire due to stressful situations. It also makes the body more prepared for future stress. Adaptogens also make the functioning of the body more efficient. Adaptogens are most commonly used for stress relief neuro and endocrine functions and also for treating HPA-axis dysfunction. These days’ adaptogens have become an integral part of sports and are included in supplements for improving physical fitness and muscle tone. Studies have revealed that the use of Withania leads to a significant increase in muscle strength. Use of Withania significantly increased muscle size. It also led to a more substantial reduction of exercise- induced muscle wear and tear due to its ability to stabilise serum creatine kinase pathway. Studies reaffirm the use of Withania in concurrence with a resistance training program for improved muscle mass and strength
