YMCA of Central Florida Orange County Public Schools Before and After School Program Elementary School in Maitland FL Mission The Y M C A works to strengthen our community by improving the quality of life and inspiring individuals and families to develop their fullest potential in spirit, mind and body. Philosophy The Y M C A believes that after school programs should provide opportunities and experiences that stimulate a child’s physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development. The program must meet the developmental needs of particular age groups and, more importantly, the individual needs of each child. The scheduling, pacing, and rhythm of each activity should be consistent with recognized principles of early childhood education, which state that each child develops at his or her own unique rate within the general needs of his or her own age group Introduction

I really enjoyed working with the student and getting hands on experience Learning how to make the one student feel special and have the one to one they need but without forgetting the other students Sometimes its hard to know when students have disabilities if they are not physical ones. It was a great way to get a different perspective of a disability I was nervous about doing this assignment because I thought I would be sad and feel sorry for the students It was a big eye opener because this student is just like other students. He laughs, smiles, cry's, is happy and sad just like any other child My most difficult experience would be the tantrums because sometimes you can help them, but other times you have to let them get it out of their system Perception Of Differences

EEX 4070 Teaching Students with Special Needs The students thought that no one wanted to be his friend and that no one liked him. Sometimes he wouldn’t respond to people he didn’t like. {Emotional Disorders} The students gets to sit with his brother when he is sad and we warn him when the whistle is going to be blown. {Fairness} Making the accommodations for the student without making things to different for the rest of the group {Teaching students with disabilities} I took what I learned in class and applied it to my hands experience I can now go into a classroom and know how to teach, understand and accommodate students with special needs Connections To Course

Civic Engagement I Support Civic Engagement and Volunteerism 100 %. It’s a great way to be a part of a community, support people, gain experience, and to learn and grow as a person. The purpose for civic engagement in society is for people to make a difference, extend a hand, support a purpose, discover new possibilities. This experience has opened me up to many other volunteer opportunities, I have started looking online for things to do in my community. I signed up to volunteer with and origination called Families in Transitions. Service learning is a great way to gain hands on experience and I recommend it to everyone.

Reflections I would recommend others to step out of their comfort zone and explore. Do something they would not normally do. I would invite people to come out and volunteer for a cause. Help them explore and understand. Answer any questions they have. I feel that society thinks that teachers have all the answers. Well, we don’t we educate ourselves that way we can educate our community. Teachers are always looking out for the greater good of their students, school and community they share everything they know that could be helpful. I have truly looked outside of the box with this assignment I want to give my all and put it into my community
