Slide 3:

JESUS IS DEDICATED Luke 2:21-24 - Mary and Joseph go to the Temple in Jerusalem to offer sacrifices for their purification and dedicate Jesus as their firstborn “… according to the Law of Moses .” (See Exodus 13:1-2 ) Luke 2:25-32 - As revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, Simeon recognizes Jesus as the Lord’s Christ who would bring “… your salvation that y ou have prepared in the presence of all peoples ….” Luke 2:33-38 - Recognizing the infant Jesus for who He was, the devoted prophetess Anna began to “… give thanks to God and to speak of Him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem .” 3

Slide 4:

Just as He did with Simeon and Anna , God calls each of us to listen and obey the leading of His Holy Spirit, recognize and believe in Jesus for His salvation, respond to His grace with thanksgiving , and share our experience with all people . 4

Slide 5:

But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere . For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing… - 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 5

UNIT 19 JESUS COMES INTO THE WORLD Session 5 – Luke 2:40-52 Jesus at the Temple Jesus Demonstrates Wisdom in God’s Law ( Luke 2:40-47) Jesus Prioritizes His Father’s Work ( Luke 2:48-50 ) Jesus Increases in Favor with God and with People ( Luke 2:51-52 ) 6

Slide 7:

SESSION AT A GLANCE From early on, Jesus demonstrated wisdom concerning His Father’s law, prioritized His Father’s work, and increased in favor with God and with people. Each step of His earthly life prepared Him to implement the eternal mission His Father had given Him. Because we belong to God in Christ, we strive to grow in wisdom and obedience as we join with Jesus in being about our Father’s work. 7

Slide 8:

QUESTIONS TO PONDER… Why is it important to keep in mind that Jesus was, and is, fully human as we are? How can we grow in wisdom concerning the things of God? What are some ways we as believers need to prioritize the mission of God in our lives? 8

Slide 9:

1. JESUS DEMONSTRATES WISDOM IN GOD’S LAW ( Luke 2:40-47 ) Luke 2:40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him . Luke 2:41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. Luke 2:42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. Luke 2:43 And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, 9

Slide 10:

1. JESUS DEMONSTRATES WISDOM IN GOD’S LAW ( Luke 2:40-47 cont’d) Luke 2:44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, Luke 2:45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. Luke 2:46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions . Luke 2:47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers . 10

Slide 11:

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding. - Proverbs 9:10 11

Slide 12:

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. - James 1:5; 3:13,17 12

Slide 13:

JESUS PRIORITIZES HIS FATHER’S WORK ( Luke 2:48-50 ) Luke 2:48 And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." Luke 2:49 And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house ?" Luke 2:50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 13

Slide 14:

“Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear ?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” - Matthew 6:31-33 14

Slide 15:

3. JESUS INCREASES IN FAVOR WITH GOD AND WITH PEOPLE ( Luke 2:51-52 ) Luke 2:51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. Luke 2:52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man . 15

Slide 16:

16 FILL IN THE BLANKS P. 46 – Jesus’ Humanity : In addition to being fully divine, the Bible also affirms that Jesus is ____ human. The New Testament affirms that Jesus’ earthly life bore all the marks of being a human. He experienced the circumstances ________ to living as a human being, such as hunger, thirst, weariness, sorrow, and _____ . fully common pain

Slide 17:

THE HUMANITY OF CHRIST Matt 4:2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, H e was hungry . Matt 8 :24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but He was asleep . John 11:35 Jesus wept . John 19:28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), "I thirst ." 17

Slide 18:

To put it in the apostle John’s language, the Word  became  flesh ( John 1:14 ). His humanity isn’t a costume. The eternal divine Son didn’t simply make a cameo in the created world. He forever joined our humanity to His divinity and for all eternity will be fully God  and fully man . He went up with a human body. He sits now in God’s presence in His humanity. And He will return “in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven”—in His humanity. - 18

Slide 19:

Jesus shows us what humanity is meant to be and what humanity one day will be.  Human beings are special in God’s eyes, and we know that because the Son of God became a man and remains a man forever. Secondly, because Jesus retains a human body we know that one day we will be like Him. We will be transformed, we will be different,  but we will still retain our bodies.   - Dr. Peter Orr Moore Theological College 19
