Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)


Definition High blood pressure is disease that is caused by the force of blood against your artery walls being high enough that it may eventually cause health problems.


Causes A direct cause of hypertension has yet to be determined. It is believed to develop over years and can be accelerated through a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. Diets high in sodium are known to agitate the disease.

How common is it?:

How common is it? “About 1 of 3 U.S. adults—or about 70 million people—have high blood pressure.1 Only about half (52%) of these people have their high blood pressure under control .” According the CDC. This makes hypertension one of the most common diseases in the U.S.

What can you do?:

What can you do? To prevent hypertension you can practice a healthy lifestyle. Some Doctors believe certain foods especially those high in salts should be avoided . It’s also important to routinely check blood pressure and if it is too high seek medical attention.

Risk Factors:

Risk Factors Risk factors include age, race, family history of the disease. Individuals older than 35 on average have a higher rate of hypertension. Race may also play a factor as on average blacks develop the disease earlier. Peoples whose family have the disease are at a higher risk.

Risk factors (continued) Those who use tobacco more frequently on average develop the disease sooner then those who don’t. People who aren’t active and are overweight may more than double their chances of the disease. Stress has also been linked as a main factor to hypertension.

Treatments :

Treatments The main treatment for people under 65 is medication and dieting that lowers sodium intake. The most important factor is overall health contributing to controlling the blood pressure, however diet and exercise isn’t always enough and sometimes medication is needed.


Review Hypertension is increased pressure on arterial walls to the point it may cause heart disease. Causes have yet to be nailed down other then lifestyle choices. In A merica 1 in 3 people have hypertension. Certain factors affect risk of disease such as age and race. Treatments mostly include lifestyle changes and medication.
