Pituitary Gland (Hypophysis):

Pituitary Gland ( Hypophysis ) Professor Husan Bano Department of Physiology Isra University, Al- Tibri Medical College , Karachi

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objectives At the end of this lecture you should be able to: Describe the location of the pituitary gland . Know the hypothalamic- hypophyseal portal system . identify the hormones secreted by the anterior and posterior pituitaries. Know the releasing hormones .

Location of the Pituitary Gland :

Location of the Pituitary Gland Pituitary gland also known as “ Hypophysis ”. Lies in diencephlon . It is connected with hypothalamus with pituitary stalk..called infundibulum

Slide 4:

Structure of Pituitary Gland Pituitary Gland have 2 lobes

Structure of Pituitary Gland:

Structure of Pituitary Gland Anterior Pituitary ( Adeno-hypophysis ; pars distalis ) True endocrine tissue. Secretes classic hormones. 2. Posterior Pituitary ( Neuro - hypophysis ; pars nervosa) Neural tissue. Secretes neuro -hormones.

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary:

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary Anterior pituitary have 5 types of cells which secretes different hormones: Somatotropes (50%) Secretes “ Growth Hormones” (GH) Promote the growth of tissue and organs of body.

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary:

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary Memmotropes (20%). Secretes “ Prolactin ” . Stimulates milk production

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary:

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary 3. Corticotropes (20%). Secretes “ Aderno - Cortico -Tropic Hormone ”(ACTH). Also called corticotrophin. Release the hormones of adrenal cortex.

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary:

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary 4. Thyrotropes (5%) Secretes “ Thyroid Stimulating Hormone ” (TSH) Also called thyrotrophin . Release the hormones of thyroid gland.

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary:

Hormones of Anterior Pituitary 5. Gonadotrope (5%) Secretes “ Follicle stimulating hormone ”(FSH) and “ Lutinizing hormone ”(LH). FSH stimulates the follicular development . LH promotes the ovulation.

Hormones of Posterior Pituitary:

Hormones of Posterior Pituitary 1. OXYTOCIN : Stimulates the smooth muscle contraction of uterus during Parturitation . Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) or Vasopressin . It act on kidney tubules and causes re-absorption of water
