How to Get Rid of “Popcorn” Ceilings

PowerPoint Presentation:

Introduction Sitting in your living room, you’re watching TV but something in your peripheral vision bothers you . You’re not even looking at it but you can see the grains of your “popcorn” ceilings protruding like breadcrumbs spread on the floor. You’ve sworn a thousand times to get rid of it but you don’t really know how or where to start . In this presentation, we will detail the process step by step so that you can kiss those ceilings goodbye, once and for all.

Why Even though “popcorn” or stucco ceilings look seriously outdated, you should not just be concerned about their impact on the styling of your interior… You see, that type of covering can also reveal to be dangerous for your health , especially if it was placed before the eighties. At that time, abestos – which can cause cancer – was frequently used in the mix . If left alone, it shouldn't pose too much risk... but if you try to remove it, you can loosen the material and inhale toxic particles. So, always test the ceilings to see if they contain abestos first.

Step I: Prepare the Ground First of all, before you even put a hand on your scraper, you need to take some preventive measures : Make sure the electricity is off as you will need to moisten the ceilings to flatten them Take the light fixtures off and remove any valuable furniture from the room that might get damaged in the process Get your equipment ready (nose and eye protection, rags, tape, scraper, sprayer...) Protect the side walls , the electrical outlets and the ground with plastic coveralls as "popcorn" removal can be quite messy

Step II: Prepare the Surface Once you've cleared the ground, you will need to moisten the celing before you can scrape the texture off of it. To make the process easier, use some type of pump sprayer that you will fill with warm water and a finger of soap . Cover the whole area but don't wet it too much so as to avoid any damage... then let it rest for about 20 minutes in order for the texture to fully absorb the mixture.

Step III: Scraping Now that the ceiling has softened up, it's time to remove that ugly "popcorn" layer . Start from a corner and proceed gently . The last thing you'd want would be to make a hole in the wall underneath. If the texture gives too much resistance, you can spray some more warm water on it. A putty knife can be of use if your scraper can't reach the narrow edge of the corners. But always remember to be cautious.

Step IV: the Final Touch You've just finished scraping the last bit off your ceiling? Courage, you're almost there! In order to get the best results , though, you will want to fix any damage you might have done to your ceiling with some filler or compound. Then, when it has all dried, for a better finish, sand the spots you have repaired with filler and any uneven surface that might still remain. After that, you can apply a coat of paint or two and you'll be left with the great looking ceiling that you deserve!

Conclusion There you have it, the different steps to get rid of your old popcorn ceilings. However, as a messy process , it can be hard to obtain great looking results. That’s why, if you’re contemplating giving your ceilings a second youth but are not the manual type, it might be a good idea to ask for professional help. That way, not only will you ensure that quality is met but also that it's done in a fast and efficient manner. If your abestos test comes back positive, though, hiring a professional is no longer an option. Don't put your health in jeopardy if you don't necessarily have to.
