1. Sam Manekshaw (Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw )-: also known as  Sam Bahadur  ("Sam the Brave"), was an Indian military leader who was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal.   On  27 June 2008, Field Marshal Sam Bahadur died in Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu. Gen. K.M. Cariappa  was appointed to this rank in1986, more than thirty years after his retirement from the Indian Army. He was a member of the Army Sub Committee of the Forces Reconstitution Committ ee, which divided the  British Indian Army  into the Indian and  Pakistani Armies after the Partition of India in 1947. Led the Indian forces in Kashmir during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 On 15 May 1993 , Field Marshal Cariappa died in Bangalore. 2. Gen. K.M. Cariappa  ( Kodandera Madappa Cariappa )

Previously the head of the Eastern Command , he became the 27th CoAS succeeding General V. K. Singh, who retired on 31 May 2012. He is second Sikh to be CoAS , the first having been General J. J. Singh.
