History OF CULTURED PEARLS :

The Pearl Source History OF CULTURED PEARLS

Introduction to Cultured PEARLS:

Pearls have captured the imagination of jewel enthusiasts for centuries. Since the beginning of time, pearls have been revered as one of the world's most beautiful and magical gems and often called the “Queen of Gems”. The whole process behind the creation of pearls naturally and their beauty has attracted the desire of many over the years. However, due their rare occurrence and high prices, it was a luxury only few could afford. Introduction to Cultured PEARLS It was only in the early 20 th century that, with the advent of pearl cultivation, pearls could be accessible by a larger section of the society. These came to be called as cultured pearls and nearly all pearls sold today in the jewelry market are cultured pearls.

How are pearls cultivated?:

How are pearls cultivated? The process begins with pearl farmers introducing an irritant (shell bead) into the oyster or mussel. To ease this irritant in the soft inner body, the mollusk deposits layers of nacre around the bead to protect itself. This oyster continues secreting layers of nacre around it as long as the irritant is inside eventually leading to the formation of this lustrous gem. The birth of a pearl is truly a miraculous event. The unique beginnings of a cultured pearl lend it the warm glow that cannot be matched by any other gem making it a lustrous star in the world of fine jewelry.

the origin of pearl cultivation:

the origin of pearl cultivation The only way Pearls were born before the 20 th century was when accidentally, a microscopic irritant intruded and settled inside the shell of a living mollusk. The mollusk, being irritated, would secret nacre to ease the irritation and result in the formation of a natural pearl. Due to the rarity of this happening, pearls were the gems of the rich. It was only in the early 1900s when Kokichi Mikimoto, the son of a noodle maker, set about to do what no one else had done. He and his wife started cultivating pearls by carefully implanting the irritant in the oyster, rather than leaving it to chance .

Cultured pearl jewelry today:

Cultured pearl jewelry today The cultured pearl market has grown manifold since their inception. The increased demand has resulted in a variety of pearls differing in color, size and shape based on the variety of the mollusk, the growing conditions, harvesting techniques and many other factors. Akoya, South Sea, Tahitian and Freshwater pearls are some of the most popular varieties and each type has some special features. These pearls are used to make earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. However, the most captivating and popular of these has always been the traditional pearl necklace, be it the pure White Akoya or a classy Black Tahitian.
