Case Studies 1 Ejaz Ashraf Nicoms Online Jul 2012

What is case study?:

What is case study? 2 A detailed contextual analysis of a limited number of events; a story an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context; An in-depth study as compared to studies with many observations (quantitative analysis) . Usually answers questions which begin with 'how' or 'why.'

How do you use the case study method?:

How do you use the case study method? 3 Six steps for case study research: Determine and define the research questions Select the cases and determine data gathering and analysis techniques Prepare to collect the data Collect data in the field Evaluate and analyze the data Prepare the report

In case study research…:

In case study research… 4 Conduct a literature review to assist in defining the research questions Find out what has already been done from the literature review

How to select case study subjects?:

How to select case study subjects? 5 Decide whether to study cases which are unique in some way, or Cases which are considered typical and may represent a variety of geographic regions, a variety of sizes, etc.

Stay focused:

Stay focused 6 Repeatedly refer back to the purpose of the study in to focus attention on where to look for evidence that will satisfy the purpose of the study Data gathered is normally largely qualitative, but it may also be quantitative eg frequencies

Process 7 Document as much information as possible without any bias. Conduct an Historical analysis Use Product/market-analysis (P/M-analysis), when analysing a business. Source: Clinical research- the SIAR way, Rolf Carlsson, latest edition, 2008.

Historical Analysis:

Historical Analysis 8 The rationale of the historical analysis is that the current situation cannot be understood without understanding the decisions and processes that have happened in the past as part of the story.

Product/Market Analysis:

Product/Market Analysis 9 The purpose of the P/M-analysis is to understand how well positioned a company is in its market environment. The P/M-analysis reveals if a company has a particular market niche. It also helps evaluate competitors

Potential risks::

Potential risks: 10 Were you objective? External validity? How to strengthen it? Techniques such as cross-case examination and within-case examination along with literature review helps ensure external validity. Generalizability? Significance of the findings?

Finally 11 Think about the potential audience and keep them in mind when you design the study, and present your findings Is your findings significant to people in the particular industry? Most importantly, are you satisfied with your findings and research?

Commentary 12 The above PPTs relate largely to carrying out a case study approach for research Some additional thoughts may be needed for using case studies to teach

Steps in Case Study Analysis:

Steps in Case Study Analysis 13 Identify specific questions the student should answer, (typically 4) Put students into small groups (6 per group) to answer the questions Give them 45 mins to 1 hour to prepare a PPT presentation on the questions Presentation should take 10 to 15 minutes Class questions for 10 minutes and discussion

Using a case study as an Assignment:

Using a case study as an Assignment 14 Assess:- Quality of group presentation Content of answers to 4 questions set Conducting of follow-up discussion For complete assignment require 1,000 word submission of narrative on case
