TED HOSE (REVIEW):

TED HOSE (REVIEW) By Manuel A. Gallegos, RN, BSN

TED Stands for::

TED Stands for: _________- __________ deterrent TED hose are usually white with a hemmed cut-out on the ball of the foot Caregivers can check ___________ without having to remove the stockings

What are TED Hose?:

What are TED Hose? T.E.D. Hose stockings are long, tight fitting "socks" that keep mild pressure on the legs to _________ blood from clotting

When should TED Hose be worn?:

When should TED Hose be worn? 1. During inactive times after surgery 2. On long airplane trips 3. If the patient has a history of p__o___ circulation 4. If client lives a s__d__n__a__y lifestyle 5. For people who work long hours on their feet

What is a Thrombus?:

What is a Thrombus? A thrombus is a solid mass of platelets and/or fibrin (and other components of blood) that forms locally in a vessel _________ form when the clotting mechanism is activated This is supposed to happen when you are injured It occurs wherever the endothelial cells lining the inner surface of an artery have been damaged

What is an Embolus?:

What is an Embolus? Something that travels through the bloodstream, l__d__e__ in a blood vessel and b__o__k__ it Examples of emboli are a detached blood clot , a clump of bacteria , and foreign material such as air A pulmonary e__b__l__s is a blood clot that has been carried through the blood into the pulmonary artery (the main blood vessel from the heart to the lung) or one of its branches, plugging that vessel

Embolus continued!!:

Embolus continued!! An embolus is most often a piece of a thrombus that has broken free and is carried toward the brain by the b__o__d__t__e__m The term thromboembolus is used a lot because it turns out that most emboli arise from thrombi Bits of plaque, fat, air bubbles, and other material also qualify as emboli

Blood C__r__u__a__i__n:

Blood C__r__u__a__i__n

What really happens?:

What really happens? An embolus floats along with the flowing blood until it encounters a narrowing in an a__t__r__ through which it cannot pass When the embolus gets stuck, it b__o__k__ the artery This reduces blood flow to downstream tissues and causes them to become i__c__e__i__.

What is a Deep Vein Thrombosis:

What is a Deep Vein Thrombosis Deep vein thrombosis (throm-BO-sis), or DVT, is a blood c__o__ that forms in a vein deep in the body Most deep vein blood clots occur in the l__w__r leg or thigh They also can occur in other parts of the body. A blood clot in a deep vein can break off and t__a__e__ through the bloodstream. The loose clot is called an embolus (EM-bo-lus

What does it look like?:

What does it look like?

Examples of DVT’s:

Examples of DVT’s

Causes and Symptoms:

Causes and Symptoms Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) refers to a blood clot embedded in one of the major deep veins of the lower legs, thighs, or pelvis A clot blocks blood c__r__u__a__i__n through these veins, which carry blood from the lower body back to the heart The blockage can cause p__i __, swelling, or warmth in the affected leg Blood clots in the veins can cause inflammation (irritation) called thrombophlebitis

What Caregiver’s should know about TED Hose:

What Caregiver’s should know about TED Hose Use TED hose only if directed by nurse or family member Check often to make sure skin is i__t__c__ Keep TED Hose on for no longer than __ hours at a time Then keep off for at least an hour Keep TED Hose clean Educate family members about benefits of TED hose

Hose Care:

Hose Care Although very durable, TED hose absorb sweat and other bodily fluids (especially in the elastic bands) and need to be laundered frequently Prolonged w__a__ is not recommended Cold or warm wash cycles or quick hand laundering usually keeps them clean Ten to 20 minutes on a low-heat dryer setting is all that's commonly needed to dry them after washing Bleaching TED hose is usually not recommended

Summary:

Summary TED stands for Thrombo-embolic deterrent Thrombo means a solid m__s__ of platelets and/or fibrin that form in a vessel An e__b__l__s is something that travels through the bloodstream, lodges in a blood vessel and blocks it A DVT stands for deep vein thrombosis The symptoms are: pain, s__e__l__n__, and warmth to leg TED hose should be handwashed. No bleach
