Choosing A Scope Mount What To Look For Just as there are many different types of shooters and hunters there are many different arguments regarding which is the perfect type of scope mount for a hunting rifle. There are a few different types of scope mounts and the war usually wages between whether the one- or two-piece mount is best. However which scope mount is best for your rifle will largely depend on your rifle in question and many people will have their preferences regardless of which type is generally considered the best by experienced shooters. Additionally those that are new to rifles and scope mounts may not even know what they’re looking for in the first place when comparing one with the other. The first type of scope mount and usually the preferred type is that of the one-piece. This type of mount does offer a couple of advantages right off the bat particularly where it may concern a AR 15. The biggest advantage that this type of mount has is that it can add height to lift the scope into a more comfortable and arguably more proper position on the firearm. It can also help drive the optic forward and over the handguard this is particularly applicable to longer scopes and this can offer the shooter much-needed eye relief. The second significant advantage that this type of mount holds is that the scope rings on either end will be automatically aligned as they are connected in the middle due to the nature of the one-piece mount. This is largely the reason why this is ordinarily the preferred type of mount. It is usually a lot more rigid and stronger as well but it is heavier than most other mounts and therefore may not be suitable for lightweight firearms. However for heavier and powerful rifles and firearms a one-piece mount will be the better choice as it will offer a lot more rigidity and support. Just as there are advantages there are also disadvantages to anything. One of the disadvantages of the one-piece mount is that it may make chamber clearance a problem in bolt action rifles. It can make the chamber difficult to clear should misfeeds or malfunctions occur and it can hinder the loading of single rounds. The second type of scope mount that exists is the two-piece scope mount which usually comes in the form of scope rings. These may not be as sturdy or tactical as the one-piece scope mount but they do have a range of benefits. They are of course much lighter than the one-piece mount and will be much better for the shooter that prefers the light rifle or carbine. They are also better suited to bolt action rifles as they offer much better access to the chamber of the rifle in question and clearance issues will not be as big of a problem as they may be with the one-piece mount. This makes two-piece ring mounts the preferred mount of choice for hunters especially as they may need to have quick access to either the mag well or the chamber when out in the field. Additionally scope mounts are usually more affordable than the one-piece mounts may be and you may find them more readily available. This makes them ideal for beginners or those that don’t yet have a particular favorite scope mount. One thing to remember though is that any two-piece scope mounts will require alignment. Of course most of them are easy to

align but the fact remains that they will need to be aligned and this alignment if not done correctly can hinder your ability to make an accurate shot. Of the two types of scope mounts that exist the one-piece and the two-piece each have their distinct advantages and disadvantages. The one-piece may be better suited to the shooter with a heavier and more powerful firearm that has a little more money to spend and the two-piece ring mounts may be better suited to the hunter as they are lightweight affordable and offer easy access to the chamber.
