STAGE OF INNOVATION SUBMITTED Our innovation is in the idea phase. The idea involves a simple way to prevent the risk of drunken driving.Various concepts that support our idea are also included. This idea will bring in an innovation which will prevent the loss of lives due to accidents caused by drunken driving. Idea Prototype Established Scaling

Approach: To develop a well structured method using sensor technology coupled with artificial intelligence to build affordable automatic control systems in cars, in order to avoid accidents caused by drunken driving . Description of the Innovation: The innovation involves devices such as: Breath sensor - Records the blood alcohol content. Use of intelligent control system - Limits the speed. A GPS tracker - tracks the person. A GSM modem - sends message to pre-loaded contacts.

COMPELLING NEED FOR THE INNOVATION SERIOUS PROBLEM Large number of people face death/ loss of limbs due to drunken driving. Drinking before driving damages not only the drunk, but also innocent people on the road. Despite all efforts by the police to prevent drunken driving the problem still exists. Thus, it is very necessary to implement this idea to prevent such incidents.

Law enforcement officials say there are several signs associated with drunken driving: Making wide turns Weaving, swerving, drifting, or straddling the center line Almost striking an object or vehicle Stopping without cause Braking/Driving erratically Responding slowly to traffic signals Turning abruptly or illegally Driving after dark with headlights off

EXISTING MEASURES TO PREVENT DRUNKEN DRIVING Preventing drinking is the first step to avoid drink and drive accidents. Raising awareness amongst people to avoid drinking and driving. Using alternate transport like cabs, buses, etc. Asking a good friend to drop you home. Selecting a designated driver. Providing non- alcoholic alternatives like water, juice, soda-pop to your guests; not compelling guests to drink alcohol. Serving plenty of food- A full stomach reduces the rate of alcohol absorption. Stop serving alcohol well before the party ends- Give your guests an extra hour or two without alcohol before they head out. Police checks on the streets using Breathalyzers. HUMAN LIVES AND LIMBS ARE IRREPLACEABLE

IMPLEMENTATION:

IMPLEMENTATION THEORETICAL WORKING OF THE IDEA CASE 1 : An inebriated person steps into the car. STEP 1 : The breath sensor immediately starts working by analyzing the air exhaled by the driver to calculate the Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). STEP 2 : Based on the BAC (>=0.5%) , the car’s ignition is disabled, and the person is not able to start the car. Next, an automatic GPS tracker identifies the person’s location and immediately the GSM modem is activated to send a message to family members, friends or the nearest police station/ patrol car (pre-loaded contacts).

THEORETICAL WORKING OF THE IDEA(CONTD.) CASE 2: A tipsy person steps into the car. STEP 1: The breath sensor immediately starts working by analyzing the air exhaled by the driver to calculate the BAC. STEP 2: Based on the BAC (0.0%<BAC<0.5%) , an automatic speed limit is set using intelligent control system , so that the person driving is unable to exceed it . A less drunk person has a fair control over driving. But, if a dangerous situation arises, and the vehicle is likely to hit obstructions due to bad driving, then STEP 3 may be executed.

STEP 3 : If in the course of travelling, the drunk person drives the car in an unsafe manner, then the intelligent control system implemented in the car is activated and a loud message warns the driver about obstructions. Also, a buzzer system starts ringing informing the pedestrians to move away from the vehicle. Finally, the car moves to a free space on detecting obstructions like a pole, another vehicle or a tree, etc. This detection of obstructions can be implemented for a certain distance. Also, in extreme situations, the car is guided to move to the side (kerb) and stop. The driver is not able to start the vehicle immediately. The car can be started only by a person whose blood alcohol level is within permissible limits. Thus, this innovation will reduce accidents due to drunken driving. IMPACT:

IMPACT By implementing this idea, we can prevent deadly accidents due to drunken driving. The Intelligent Control System, GPS and GSM design ensures the safety of the drunken driver as well as that of the people on the road. Making such a device an integral part of every car, at an affordable price, will save precious lives, time and money. The idea can be implemented not only in cars but in other heavy transport vehicles, to prevent accidents.
