The Innovation:

The Innovation Summary of the innovation needs to cover the following titles: Chosen industry – Public services Chosen technologies : Mobility and Analytics Objective: To prevent electricity theft which accounts to more than 30% of the electricity generated. Approach: Tracking electricity node to node from point of generation and point of consumer Describe the innovation developed : tracking the power passing node to node, using smart sensor (Watt-meter) and uploading the data in real-time through security services and mobility services . The data can be analysed for inconsistency, and point of theft can be identified. S ecurity service will ensure un-tempered data. Maximum Points: 10

Compelling need for the innovation Demonstrate a compelling need for your innovative concept by connecting with the industry and technology area you’ve chosen: Generating Power is very costly and unprofitable for the government due to subsidization and Theft. As much as 40 % of electricity generated is stolen at the consumer point (source : http :// usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/world/story/2012-08-03/india-power-outage/56746748/1 ) . Even if 10% is considered as transmission losses, a total of 50+% of the electricity generated is lost by the time it reaches the end user. Pinpointing the point of theft is impossible because the transmission lines are not tracked. Billions of dollars are lost each year due to this. If this problem is rectified, it is a boost for Indian economy and will prevent blackouts. Maximum Points: 20

Impact:

Impact Explain the expected impact of your idea, metrics for how you will evaluate your success of the innovation, and how will your idea sustain over time. Calculating the amount of money lost due to power theft is difficult and generally not given out to the public. According to RTI Forums, Rs 35000 cr was lost in the year 04-05 due to electricity theft ( source: http:// www.rtiindia.org/forum/2159-rs-35000-crore-loss-electricity-theft.html ) . This value should have increased at least by 10 times in 12-13 due to increase in coal and fuel prices. Even if 30 present of this value is saved, it will give a huge push to Indian economy. Electricity prices will go down drastically which will bring down food prices and stop the growth of inflation. Indian government spends least on Healthcare. The extra revenue generated can help the government provide healthcare to poor patients. Train which runs on electricity will be cheaper to operate and train tickets will be cheaper, which will further bring down the cost of food logistics and in turn, food prices will come down. When it comes to sustainability of this idea, it can be implemented and improved over the years, as long as electricity is generated, the need to prevent theft will always be there. Implementation:

Implementation Demonstrate that you can successfully implement your idea by providing a feasible timeline, possible budgets required along with the potential challenges you foresee and the solutions to tackle them. Support your innovation with possible collaterals such as by uploading video links, photographs, reference material of the innovation developed, etc. The Idea is to install a wattmeter at every point of distribution which measures the power passing through the node in real time and sends the data to a cloud drive using mobility services. The algorithm measures the total power of previous nodes and total power of its child nodes and looks for inconsistency. When the point of inconsistency is found, the officials are notified and the investigation for missing electricity can be initiated. In the map above, the 3000kw generated at the power plant is distributed through the substations and then to the end users. If we measure the power passing through each node, the point of inconsistency can be identified. It is the node where the electricity is missing. The officials can then investigate the loss between the nodes.

Here inconsistency is found between nodes S2-H4, S3-H7 .S6-H13 So these are the places where electricity is missing and action can be taken. Requirements: Digital Wattmeter to measure the power, wireless network adapter, Cloud storage, Algorithm. Cost of installing device per node : 1000 rs ( wattmeter+WNA ) Total number of households: (153,440,588 X 2) = ~(300,000,000) source : ( http :// www.moef.nic.in/downloads/public-information/Residentialpowerconsumption.pdf ) Total cost of installation: (300000000 households * 1000 RS)= 300000000000 (3000cr to 5000cr ) Amount lost due to theft : Rs 35000 cr (in 2004) (cost of generation has increased 10 times since 2004 hence amount lost is more than 10 times of 35000 cr ) (Cost of installation is less than 5% of the amount lost due to theft.)

Challenges:

Challenges Will take years to install it node by node. Government may not be interested but power sector is slowly being privatized hence good market potential in private sector.

The Competitive Advantage Analysis of competitive innovation that are in the area that you are presenting. What is the competitive advantage of your innovation? Presently there is no way of finding out the point of theft of electricity. The officeals rely on tips from the consumers to catch thieves. Hence no competition in this field. Sources of guidance you received to develop the innovation to be mentioned. Google search, Government websites and lots of inspiration from power blackouts and load shedding in my city.
