Apparently car exhaust may not look like a worthy component but it holds much significance to the car. It expels the burnt air-fuel mixture from the engine. But its role is not just limited to this portion it makes sure it filters the toxic gasses and reduces the noise. Be it a normal exhaust system or a roaring mini cooper S exhaust systems it enables a car to gain an optimal point of performance. In this article we will discuss the role of a car exhaust system by evaluating the functions of its several parts.

The first component of an exhaust system is an exhaust manifold. It is an assembly that collects gasses from two or more cylinders in one pipe. It is made of stainless steel aluminium or iron-cast linked to the cylinders of the engine. It means that the function of the exhaust system is to collect the burnt air-fuel mixture from the engine to enable it to perform steadily. The exhaust system comprises oxygen sensors which monitor the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. One oxygen sensor locates at the end of the manifold and the other at the end of the catalytic converter. These sensors send this information to ECUengine control unit which adjusts the amount of air-fuel ratio accordingly. If an oxygen sensor fails it will not be able to send information to the ECU. As a result ECU will not be able to adjust the air-fuel ratio and it will lead to a low-fuel economy. Therefore one of the roles of an exhaust system is to achieve fuel economy. Oxygen Sensors:

The third part of an exhaust system is a catalytic convertor. The role of a catalytic converter is to remove toxic emissions like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Catalytic converters use redoxreduction and oxidationreactions to remove the toxic gasses. The catalyst in the catalytic converter helps to speed up the removal of pollution. It means that the role of the catalytic converter is to clean and detoxify the harmful emissions. Catalytic Converter:

The muffler also known as a silencer is another crucial part of the exhaust system that reduces noise. It is a pipe that consists of baffles that reduce the noise of gasses moving ahead to the tailpipe. If there was no muffler gasses would exit with a loud noise which could create noise pollution. Muffler: Tail Pipe: The last part of an exhaust system is a tailpipe that vents out to air. It is the pipe through which gasses expel from the car into the air.
