Listening to a child/young person telling about abuse… Remember: You are not the investigator, so do not have to prove or disprove anything Be calm and receptive to the child Listen carefully. Use neutral prompts such as: ‘Go on’ and ‘tell me more about that’ Take the child seriously Reassure the child that they are right to tell you

Use the child’s own words and include any questions you asked Don’t: Make promises you cannot keep; for example to keep things secret Investigate and interrogate
