Number of Jobless Immigrants in Canada Rising 19 November 2014, Toronto: The latest statistics released by the Canada Labor Force survey indicate the number of jobless immigrants is on rise. The divide between the jobless Canadian citizens and the jobless immigrants is widening.

Slide 2:

Minister Claims Attracting Maximum Skilled Immigrants Fourteen percent of the skilled immigrants who have arrived in Canada in the last 5 years and have secured a University degree are unemployed. Chris Alexander, Citizenship and Immigration Minister, says that the aim is to attract nearly 285,000 skilled immigrants to Canada in the year 2015. He claims that this is the highest number of immigrant intake in Canada compared to the recent past intake of immigrants. It will help in boosting the economy of the country and thus, maximizing the immigrants ’ intake is the right thing to do.

Slide 3:

Unemployed Skilled Immigrants Are Increasing in Numbers Canadian government has failed to deliver what its promise of employment for these skilled immigrants. It is sad to find PhD degree holders driving taxis in the cities of Canada. There are also engineering graduates and MBA ’ s who are forced to run shops in the country. The Survey found there are 200 tax drivers in Canada who are qualified doctors or have a PhD degree. All these are immigrants. In comparison, there are only 55 Canadian citizens driving taxis after completing their medical degree program.

Slide 4:

25 % of the taxi drivers who are immigrants have undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. In a sharp contrast, only 4% of the taxi drivers who are Canadians hold these degrees. This clearly reflects the bias among the Canadian employers against skilled immigrants. They seem to be getting lower hourly wages and they are being placed in low-level positions in Canadian companies. They are also being made to wait for a long time before they are offered a job. Skilled immigrants in large numbers have been coming to Canada since 1980 when Canada opened its doors to professionals from all across the globe. However, the unemployment levels among skilled immigrants in Canada is at its highest today and professional immigrants in the country earn just 2/3rd of what their Canadian counterparts earn

Slide 5:

In the backdrop of high unemployment and poorly paying jobs for the immigrants, it is pertinent to ask if the new immigration policy announced by the Canadian government is actually serving its purpose. Is it fair to promise wonderful employment opportunities to skilled immigrants and then ask them to settle for jobs that are way below their skills and educational qualifications? The question is yet unanswered. www.CanadaUpdates.com has been fulfilling dreams of all the young achievers by helping them migrate & settle in Canada.
