His Life:

Born: 1564 in Stratford upon Avon Lived in and around London most of his life Died: 1616 in Stratford upon Avon He was 54. I used my calculator… Avon is a river. The city of Stratford is next to it. His Life

Lived mostly in the 16 th century. 1501 to 1599 is the 16 th century, just trust me on this. Elizabethan Era Elizabeth the 1 st was queen during this time His Life

Who lived around him?:

He got married at 18 to a 26 year old. She gave birth 6 months later (you do the math) Wife’s name: Anne Hathaway Not this one: He had 3 children, but no one cares. After they were born, he left for London. Who lived around him?

When he got to London he started doing odd jobs and also writing plays. In 1599 he and his company, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, built a theater called “The Globe” In London… The interior was shaped like a cylinder, just like the Earth! Wait, what?

After “The Globe” was built, he wrote and acted in his own plays. His plays became commercially successful He made a bunch of money He continued to act and write almost all the way up until his death in 1616. In London…

His plays were considered to be fairly good during his lifetime. Not the greatest thing ever, but good. Years after he died, he was rediscovered and elevated to his current level. Currently, he is regarded by most to be the greatest writer of plays that has ever lived This might be hype, or the fact that all English teachers in the world teach his plays… What did he do during his life?

That’s how people spoke at the time “How now” and “For Sooth!” Elizabethan English Words and grammar used during the Elizabethan Era All of these words exist we just don’t use them anymore Why do his plays sound so funny?

Why is Shakespeare sometimes called “The Bard”:

“Bard” is an old word meaning “Professional Poet” A rich person would hire a Bard to write songs and poems about his family This would be like someone today hiring Adam Lambert to write and perform a song about their grandfather at his funeral. Which would just be weird, which is why it really isn’t done anymore. Why is Shakespeare sometimes called “The Bard”

Not really He “borrowed” lots of stories Historical figures Folk tales Mythology Othello – based on an Italian short story Julius Caesar was an actual guy who got betrayed and murdered Did he actually think up all of those plays?
