Desentery Infection of the intestines resulting in severe diarrhoea with the presence of blood and mucus in the faeces . Bacillary Desentery ? Shigella

ETIOLOGY: Anaerobic facultative Gram negative bacilli – Shigella dysenteriae . Shiga toxin – enterotoxic , cytotoxic , neurotoxic . Inoculation period ranges from 12hrs – 2 weeks

MODE OF TRANSMISSION:

SYMPTOMS:

SYMPTOMS Abdominal Pain Vomiting Nausea Fever Watery diarrhoea Intestinal cramps Mucoid stools

DIAGNOSIS:

DIAGNOSIS Stools microscopical examination Serum specimen Tested by using Mac Conkey agar, EMB agar Tested for shigella

IMMUNIZATION AND TREATMANT METHODS:

IMMUNIZATION AND TREATMANT METHODS Antibiotics – Sulfamethoxazole , norfloxacin , ciproflaxacin , trimethoprim Fluroquinolones in childrens Fluid replacement by oral and I.V. In mild cases no antibiotics are required

PREVENTION AND CONTROL Effective disposal of sewage Safe drinking water Contaminated food should be avoided Washing hands thoroughly Maintaining good hygiene
