By Alex Clauss & Brittany Hernandez Refining Societal Ideals Through Classical Art Forms

Thesis:

Thesis We explored three genres of classical art that confer privilege or status on the participants as they display a model of elegance as well as exemplify refinement through movement or participation. Through this exploration we found that classical styles of art are exemplary of the ideals of life beyond the every day and attach to behavior that is ingrained in the human psyche.

Outline Classical Music Classical American Film Classical Javanese Dance Conclusion Questions to Consider Works Cited

Classical Music:

Classical Music The Role of Romantic Composers

Definition:

Definition Romantic music is a genre of Classical Music related to Romanticism Romanticism emphasizes and validates strong emotional responses to an aesthetic experience. Some romantic composers include Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Function:

Function Mostly served the aristocracy Classical music was more prominent, so Romantic composers had to sway large concert-going audiences to their genre They achieved their goal, since Romantic music became popular, and by doing so they preserved the cultural taste of the time

Influences:

Influences Nationalistic Ideals of the Romantic Period following the Napoleonic Wars Since the aristocracies of the world were mostly restored after Napoleon’s reign, the music celebrated the upper class The concert-goers of the time hugely shaped the music since their attendance was based off of their like or dislike of the music

Relation to Thesis:

Relation to Thesis Romantic music as well as the act of listening to it showed status on the participants It began with the aristocracy and they display a model of elegance The composers exemplify refinement through participation since they were crafting music to higher societal ideals Romantic music attaches to behavior and emotions that are ingrained in the human psyche such as heightened emotional responses.

Classical American Film:

Classical American Film A Film Embodying A Cinematic Classic

Definition:

Definition The film looks at the main character’s life and how his experience is more profound than his version of ordinary.

Function:

Function This film showcases human nature such as curiosity, living vicariously through others, and breaking from routine. The cinematography for the film is unique because the audience is looking in on the main character who is looking in on the lives of his neighbors. It goes a step further because it makes the audience work to piece together the clues to the story, which satisfies the basic human characteristics of curiosity and wonder.

Influences:

Influences It Had to be Murder (1942) by Cornell Woolrich Original story only included the murder plot, not the neighbors and other elements that define the film as a classic. Alfred Hitchcock took the story and expanded upon it, adding in relatable human traits while using the cinematography as the catalyst.

Relation to Thesis:

Relation to Thesis Rear Window confers privilege on moviegoers since they get the perspective from outside looking in. This film is exemplary of the ideals of life beyond the every day and attaches to behavior that is ingrained in the human psyche, as previously mentioned.

What We Learned:

What We Learned As we have seen, classical music, film, and dance confer privilege or status on the participants as they display a model of elegance as well as exemplify refinement through movement or participation. We have also seen through this exploration that classical styles of art are exemplary of the ideals of life beyond the every day and attach to behavior that is ingrained in the human psyche

Questions to Consider:

Questions to Consider Do you believe that unison movement in our American culture provides the same function as it does for the Javanese culture? We know that classic art reflects the ideals of society, but is the alternative also true, that it could reveal flaws in our society? If you combine classic art forms, do they still function in the same way as they did on their own, or does the combination create new or different meaning?
