GENDER STATISTICS Gender issues have emerged at the central stage of development process in most countries including India. In fact, how to empower women to reduce gender inequalities in the society is presently a major concern of policy makers and planners all over the world.:

The relevant issues relating to gender statistics are-:

The relevant issues relating to gender statistics are- ( i ) Millennium Development Goals and Engendering Statistics; (ii) Gender Budgeting/ Audit; (iii) Economic Perspective on Women’s Human Rights and Gender Disparity and (iv) Data Gaps and Emerging Issues.

Surveys on Gender Issues:

Surveys on Gender Issues With a view to assess the contribution of the women and men in the national economy through their household work and to study the gender discrimination in household activities, a Methodological Time Use Survey (TUS) was conducted in about 18600 households spread over six States (Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya) in the country through the respective Directorates of Economics and Statistics.

The statistics on social issues pertaining to important areas such as health, education, employment, crime against women, and 23 women's participation in decision making, which need to be collected on a regular basis to assess the impact of various policies and programmes of the government aimed to improve the status of women in the society and to eliminate discrimination if any on the basis of gender, are known as gender statistics.

The Indicators:

The Indicators Health - Sex-Ratio, Life Expectancy at Birth, Age-Specific Mortality Rate Education- Female Literacy, Gross Enrollment Ratio by sex, Drop-Out Rates by sex, participation of women in the economy- Work Force Participation Rate (percentage ) by sex violence against women- Dowry Deaths, Rape, Prostitution, Molestation, Eve teasing and cruelty by husband or relatives participation of women in the decision making- Number of women entrepreneurs in the manufacturing and service sectors, Proportion of women in the decision making level at the local government level .

Millennium Development Goals:

Millennium Development Goals MDGoal 3: To promote gender equality and empower women. Target 4: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005 and to all levels of education no later than 2015. Indicators: 1. Ratio of girls to boys in primary, secondary and tertiary education. 2. Ratio of literate females to males (15-24) years old. 3. Share of women in wage employment in the non-agricultural sector. 4. Proportion of seats held by women in national parliament MDGoal 5: To improve maternal health. Target 6: Reduce by three quarters, between 1990 and 2015 the maternal mortality ratio

GENDER EMPOWERMENT MEASURE(GEM) GEM,INTRODUCED BY THE HDR IN 1995, INDICATES WHETHER WOMEN ARE ABL TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL LIFE. HDR 2007/2008 PRESENTS GEM FOR 93 COUNTRIES. THE TOP 4 RANKING COUNTRIES ARE- NORWAY, SWEDEN, FINLAND AND DENMARK .
