The Consequences of Prenatal Smoking and Drinking :

By Junelle Allen and Tatiana Nell The Consequences of Prenatal Smoking and Drinking

Prenatal Smoking Consequences for Infants:

The infant is usually born at a low birth rate because of poor prenatal care The infant suffers prenatal neglect and abuse, and infant maltreatment as a result of the mother smoking Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke during fetal development is said to increase rates of respiratory tract infections and decrease lung growth It can also cause sudden infant death syndrome, behavioral problems and neurocognitive decrements According to the American Journal of Epidemiology “women who had smoked while pregnant (33% of sample) had a greater likelihood than non-smokers of experiencing placental abruption and placenta previa Prenatal Smoking Consequences for Infants

Consequences for Children:

Women who smoke more than one pack a day during pregnancy are significantly more likely to have a child that is obese as a preschooler Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke during fetal development is said to cause childhood asthma Multiple studies have shown how detrimental the use of tobacco smoking is to the child’s cognitive development Prenatal smoking affects the child’s ability to process speech and their ability to distinguish among syllables Prenatal smoking is also strongly associated with learning and memory a deficit which is likely to affect the child in school. This too can affect relationships with family and friends Consequences for Children

Consequences for Adolescents:

The more the mother smokes during and after pregnancy, the more likely the child is to smoke as an adolescent The adolescent has an increased chance of being sexually, physically, emotionally abused and or neglected, and they too have an increased risk of being substance abusers Consequences for Adolescents

Prenatal Drinking Consequences for Infants:

Prenatal drinking is significantly related to lower birth weight Prenatal drinking can also cause a decrease in the circumference of the head and chest of an infant Consuming alcohol during pregnancy is very bad for the fetal development no matter the dosage It is associated with multiple negative health affects including growth and neurobehavioral deficits andor dysmorphology Alcohol consumption on various levels during pregnancy is also related to fetal alcohol syndrome ( FAS) and fetal alcohol effects (FAE ) Prenatal Drinking Consequences for Infants

Consequences for Children:

Studies have shown that prenatal drinking can cause children to have ADHD, anxiety disorders, oppositional disorders, and attention problems Promotes externalizing and internalizing behavior Postnatal alcohol abuse increases the child’s likelihood of being sexually, physically, and emotionally abused Consequences for Children

Consequences for Adolescents:

Parental substance abuse is significantly related to teen substance abuse A teen is 2 to 3 times more likely to be a victim of physical and sexual abuse Consequences for Adolescents
