RISING SEA LEVELS: PACIFIC ISLAND NATIONS RACE AGAINTS TIME By Morgan Horan & Asinate Vitusagavulu for BI 105

Pacific Prognosis :

Pacific Prognosis The tiny Pacific island nation of Tuvalu is probably going to be one of the first countries in the world to be wiped out from earth as rising sea levels continue to threaten its existence.

Slide 4:

Recently tides that usually peak in February have been getting higher each year.

Slide 5:

Eventually this will lead to the entire country having to evacuate in the next 50 years if the rising sea level predictions prove accurate. http://www.moyak.com/papers/tuvalu-climate-change.html

Slide 6:

Anote Tong, president of the island nation of Kiribati believes his country will soon become the modern day Atlantis and has sought international help for the relocation of his people as their 33 attolls vanish into the sea.

Already two islands that are part of Kiribati have gone under waves, the rest of the island nation await the same fate…

Slide 8:

Rising sea levels is one of the many detrimental effects of global warming. Overtime, increasing warmer temperatures have steadily melted ice sheets and glaciers, sometimes entire polar caps. Such events have happened many times even in the fairly recent few million years of Earth’s 4.6 billion year long “lifetime”. The dramatic rise of sea levels has had a profound effect on islands in the South Pacific who are at a greater risk of having their countries completely destroyed and the disappearance of their cultures that have existed for thousands of years.
