LITHIUM : 

LITHIUM most widely prescribed medication for treating bipolar disorder Reduce the severity and frequency of mania Relieve bipolar depression Significantly reduction of suicide risk Prevents future manic episodes Maintenance therapy Acts on a person's central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) More control over their emotions Reduce the extremes in behavior Dosage and brand cannot be changed without careful monitoring by a physician Common side effects Hand tremors, increased thirst and urination Diarrhea, vomiting, weight gain Impaired memory and poor concentration

anticonvulsants : 

anticonvulsants Used as mood stabilizers to treat mania in bipolar disorder Used to treat bipolar depression Prescribed only for people who did not respond to lithium Can be prescribed alone, with lithium, or with an antipsychotic drug to control mania Calm hyperactivity in the brain Prescribed for rapid cycling Four or more episodes of mania and depression within one year Each acts on the brain in slightly different ways Maximum effectiveness after taking the drug for a couple of weeks Depakote Depakene Tegretol Lamictal Side effects Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, tremor, rash, and weight gain Regular blood tests to monitor the patient’s health Can cause liver or kidney damage or decrease the amount of platelets in the blood
