‘Time out of time’ :

1 ‘Time out of time’ Remembrance Sunday

‘Time out of time’ :

2 ‘Time out of time’ Time is such a strange phenomenon... The concept of ‘fixed’ universal time is quite recent! Time still runs differently in different places...clocks. Time runs slower the faster you move...rockets. Time seems to speed up as we get older...proportions. Time can sometimes seem to stop...black holes. But generally these look like quirky, slightly crazy aberrations! Not the stuff of our everyday world.

‘Time out of time’ :

3 ‘Time out of time’ Generally we live within a linear time scale – The Past...seems set and unchangeable. The Present...seems as if it’s on a knife edge. The Future....unknowable & sometimes fearsome. The way in which we live within Time means that our whole thinking can become pretty fixed...as we sense that time only runs one way – FORWARD!

‘Time out of time’ :

4 ‘Time out of time’ The effect of this rigid thinking about Time is to make us, as a society: ‘Sick at heart’ for all that seems lost to us... Obsessive about ‘youth’...holding on to what we have! Grasping about our wealth... Anxious about change... Fearful of death... It can be quite easy to get caught up in this...

‘Time out of time’ :

5 ‘Time out of time’ But is Time actually like this? What about... Thinking of Time as a book...standing outside the story. Thinking of Time as a piano keyboard...interactive!

‘Time out of time’ :

6 ‘Time out of time’ ‘An Experiment with Time’ JW Dunne 1927 Dunne compares time to a piano keyboard. When we’re awake, we’re sitting at the keyboard striking one note at a time, in sequence, from left to right. We cannot normally strike keys to the left (”the past”) of the one in front of us, nor keys to the right (”the future”). But when we sleep, we are freed from that rigorous linearity. Dunne concluded that in dreams we are in effect striking keys all over the keyboard, hence the haphazard combination of elements and time events.

‘Time out of time’ :

7 ‘Time out of time’ Once we start thinking about Time differently it helps us to answer the first of two questions... 1. What does it mean for us to have a biblical understanding of Time? a. God stands outside Time altogether “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” Ps 90:2

‘Time out of time’ :

8 ‘Time out of time’ b. God Himself begins & ends everything “I am the Alpha and the Omega says the Lord God, who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” Rev 1:8 c. God has a different perspective on our history “For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night” Ps 90:4

‘Time out of time’ :

9 ‘Time out of time’ d. God knows everything about us Our past – everything that has happened Ps 139:13. Our present – everything that is happening Ps 139:2f. Our future – everything that will happen Ps 139:16. 2. What difference does having a biblical understanding of time make to our life? A passage to help us today - Hebrews 12: 1-13.

‘Time out of time’ :

10 ‘Time out of time’ Hebrews 12: 1-13  1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

‘Time out of time’ :

11 ‘Time out of time’ 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  4In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,  and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,  6because the Lord disciplines those he loves,  and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."

‘Time out of time’ :

12 ‘Time out of time’ 7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.

‘Time out of time’ :

13 ‘Time out of time’ 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. 12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13"Make level paths for your feet," so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.

‘Time out of time’ :

14 ‘Time out of time’ 2. What difference does having a biblical understanding of Time make to our life? 1. It reveals a spiritual dimension to our life today v1 “We are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses...” There is an unseen spiritual reality to our life.... The deeds of the past are very near to us... Despite our sophistication we have eternal choices...

‘Time out of time’ :

15 ‘Time out of time’ 2. Having a biblical understanding of Time brings focus to our life “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith” v2 Doing this helps us to throw off sin v1...less enticing! Doing this leads to perseverance v1...reason for it! Doing this means we can cope with suffering now v2 ...because it’s short term!

‘Time out of time’ :

16 ‘Time out of time’ 3. Having a biblical understanding of Time helps to reveal God’s purpose for our life. “God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.” v10 We are shaped by the hardships that we endure v7. Hardship can be lived through as God’s discipline v7 God’s discipline leads to righteousness & peace v11. We begin to bear the likeness of Jesus...THE purpose.

‘Time out of time’ :

17 ‘Time out of time’ Time is not just a built in feature of our life that we have to learn to fight against NOR the ultimate destroyer of our personal & physical world... It is the framework in which our loving Heavenly Father nurtures & prepares us for the glory of His new creation... What will that be like?....

‘Time out of time’ :

18 ‘Time out of time’ We are given just a glimpse in Rev 21:1-7... “The first earth & first heaven have passed away v1 We are WITH Him & He is STAYING with us v3 He is wiping away ALL tears v4 No more death v4 No more heartache or mourning No more crying or pain No more TIME as the old order has passed away v4 Everything is made NEW! v5 Life in its fullness is FREELY offered & received v7”

‘Time out of time’ :

19 ‘Time out of time’ Then it will be the end of the chapter and of the book And all shall be well
