Need for Bilingual Teachers Over 1.5 million students in California are English Learners Majority of EL students speak Spanish Other language groups include Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese Schools need teachers who can communicate with students and their families and serve as a resource to other teachers

Although California law discourages bilingual education :

What are the requirements for admission to obtain a Bilingual Authorization? : 

What are the requirements for admission to obtain a Bilingual Authorization? Bachelor’s Degree or Completion of GE requirements with no more than 6 units remaining in your major Admission into Multiple Subject or Single Subject Credential Program Prior CSUF and non-CSUF credential program completers (those from other institutions) may also obtain Bilingual Authorization A schedule of Overview Meetings for Credential Students are available at the following website: http://ed.fullerton.edu/adtep/

Spanish Bilingual Authorization For Candidates Starting Spring or Fall 2011 Experienced Team of Instructors National Recognition (NCATE) Many courses integrate bilingual methodology Two additional courses Student teaching in bilingual classroom Spanish language assessment May select a two or a three-semester cohort in the Multiple Subject Program (check with Single Subject Program for their semester options) Begin in the spring or fall of 2011

Multiple Subject Credential Program Options 2 Semester Program Classes during the day Full time-courses and student teaching Employment not possible May not be able to take additional courses Bilingual Authorization courses may need to be taken during the summer of 2011 or extend program an additional semester. 3 Semester Program Classes in late afternoon and evening Student teaching in 2nd and 3rd semester Allows for part-time employment May take additional courses Bilingual Authorization courses may be offered during the credential program or in summer A good option for Bilingual Authorization

Tentative Summer 2011 Courses : 

Tentative Summer 2011 Courses CSU Fullerton may offer the following courses: EDEL/EDSC 446 Methods and Inquiry EDEL/EDSC 541 Culture and Education of Latino Students These courses are open to credential candidates that have been accepted into the credential program as well as CSUF and non-CSUF completers. CSUF and non CSUF completers will be required to take an intake language assessment first. After acceptance, then possibly register through “Extended Education” in order to take these required courses.

Getting the Bilingual Authorization, In Summary : 

Getting the Bilingual Authorization, In Summary CSUF credential students take extra courses, conduct student teaching in a bilingual class, and pass language and academic assessments within the required Bilingual Authorization courses (EDEL/EDSC 446 & EDEL/EDSC 541). CSUF and non CSUF credential completers must be assessed for language during an intake interview and then take required courses and their corresponding assessments to get a Bilingual Authorization add-on. NOTE: These courses (446 and 541) are graded courses that can be included in the Master’s Program at CSUF. So, credential students and former completers may think about getting the Master’s Degree as well.
