Slide 10: Horton Plains is named after the visit of
Sir Robert Wilmot Horton, a former British
Governor of Sri Lanka to this place. It is the
only one mountain national park in Sri Lanka,
which is situated in Nuwara Eliya district in the
Central Province. It is located 2 300 metres
above the sea level. It is declared as a
national park in 1988.
Slide 11: Horton Plains is the headwaters of 3 major
rivers in Sri Lanka Mahaweli,Kelani and
Walawe . It is fed well from the North-East
and the South-West monsoonal rains.The
mean annual rainfall is about 5 000mm and
the mean annual temperature is around
150C.During the South-West monsoonal
season the wind speed is higher. The dry season
occurs from January to March. The ground frost is
common in February. April and August are the
best months to visit the plains.

plains.
Dwarf bamboo, ferns and nearly 54 woody

such as Bovitiya,Binara and some endemic
Orchids.
