A telnet service is any computer that allows you to access information by telnet. Most telnet services are easy to use. Some services may require you to enter information before you can use the services.

LOGIN NAME Most telnet services require that you enter a login name and password to access information. Telnet services on the internet often tell you which login name to use before you connect to the computer. Many telnet services allow you to log into the computer using the login name “guest” with no password. :

TERMINAL TYPE Describes the language a telnet program uses to communicate w/ the computer you are connecting to. Most computers require you to specify the terminal type you use. Each terminal type uses specific keyboard keys to perform specific tasks. VT100 is the most common terminal type and works w? most computers. :

HOST ADDRESS The host address of a telnet service is the name or number of the computer that makes the information available. Most telnet programs allow you to enter the name of the computer you want to connect to, such as ”main.maran.com” Some telnet programs require to enter the number of the computer you want to connect to, called IP number. A host address consists of four numbers separate by periods (.) such as 207.1

PORT NUMBER A telnet port number refers to a specific location on a computer where information is available. The port number for most telnet services is 23. If the host address ends with a colon (:) followed by a number ( example: main.maran.com;23) the number after the colon is port number. If there is more one telnet service on the sam computer, each telnet service have a different port number.
