Hands-on Inquiry Based Learning : 

Hands-on Inquiry Based Learning Learning is guided by student and teacher generated questions Students will discover information through the use of manipulatives and authentic materials Group work, games and differentiated learning allow students to work both independently and cooperatively

First Grade Curriculum : 

First Grade Curriculum 1st grade content will be challenging, age appropriate and aligned with New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards Homework will provide meaningful practice of work that is completed in class Students will learn work habits, critical thinking and study skills to be used throughout their academic careers Students will become life-long learners

LiteracyBy the end of first grade, students should be able to… Reading: develop and apply a sound-symbol relationship of the alphabet to decode words to read recognize and use sight words in reading and writing choose appropriate literature independently utilize reading comprehension strategies to think critically about reading and monitor their understanding predicting/inferring visualizing schema/connections questioning summarizing/retelling acquire decoding strategies in order to build fluency, expression, and stamina feel comfortable reading different genres of text, including songs/nursery rhymes, fiction, non-fiction and poetry

Classroom Community Morning meeting will set the tone and agenda for the day including: a morning message attendance lunch count calendar weather counting the days of school schedule songs Afternoon wrap-up meetings will review the day and provide students with a preview of tomorrow Character education provide students with positive feedback and reinforcement to ensure that school is a safe and welcoming place to learn and make new friendships
