Pay It Forward Helping Students Learn to Save By Hannah-chan Gazzo and Kimberly Gazzo

Saving is just not considered cool and the importance of saving money is not often stressed. In this modern age, rampant materialism and pressure to spend money are the primary messages most kids are getting from the media and even their own family environments.

Our Pay-It-Forward Plan : 

Our Pay-It-Forward Plan In this economic climate, however, ten dollars is not a lot of money, so our first order of business was to leverage our money. We decided to use our $10 to teach kids to save…and maybe more.

Utilizing the Advantages Life throws your Way : 

Utilizing the Advantages Life throws your Way It just so happened that the 25th Annual Dryden Dairy Day Parade was held on a warm and sunny Saturday, June 13, 2009…just days after the launch of the Alternatives Pay-it-Forward program.

We spent our $10 to buy bottles of water we could then sell along the parade route at a small mark up. :

Asking Others to be Involved We explained our plan to the manager at Clark’s grocery store in Dryden and they agreed to chill the water overnight in their dairy cooler.

And We’re Off! : 

And We’re Off! Hannah, and her best friend Kelsie Torello, share the gift of cold water with grateful parade spectators.

After 1 hour of selling, $10 becomes $60! :

The now $60 cache of Alternatives Pay It Forward money will be used as incentive prizes for new Student Savers at our brand new Alternatives Student Credit Union.

An Alternatives Student Credit Union at the New Roots Charter School : 

An Alternatives Student Credit Union at the New Roots Charter School In September, 2009, Hannah, Kelsie, and their Moms (with help from Joe Cummins, the Alternatives Community Educator) will launch this Student Savings branch at their brand new high school in Ithaca’s historic Clinton House.

Alternatives Student Credit Unions The Student Credit Union was created to: help students make savings a regular part of their week help young people grow up with an understanding of financial services and how to use them responsibly. helps students learn how to manage checking accounts, VISA cards, and pay off loans

To make saving easy, the Student Credit Union: has branches in areas schools offers a savings account with a higher interest rate than a regular Alternatives’ account requires a minimum deposit of only $1.00 to earn interest

New Roots High SchoolStudent Credit Union Saver Incentive contest : 

New Roots High SchoolStudent Credit Union Saver Incentive contest All students who open accounts (or initiate transactions for their existing accounts) at the New Roots Student Credit Union in the first 10 days of operations will be entered in a drawing. Six lucky savers will win a $10 deposit into their Alternatives accounts.

If you like our idea… and we win the $500 Pay It Forward prize… Half the money will be used as incentive for students to join the Student Credit Union—$5.00 will be deposited into to first 50 student saver accounts. The other half of the money will then be used for another Pay It Forward project

New Roots Student Savers learn to Pay It Forward New Roots Student Savers will form a Pay It Forward committee under the direction of faculty and parent volunteers They will systematically decide how best to utilize the Pay It Forward money Their guidelines will be the same as the original Alternatives PIF program
